Recoil question

Hi

I shoot prone and have always used Anschütz factory barrels.
Now, the Shilen 4 groove 16 twist ratchet got my attention
Is there any difference in recoil between a 4 groove ratchet and a standard 6 groove .22 LR rimfire barrel? More, less, equal?

Thanks

C.

I have a Shilen 4 groove, Benchmark 4 groove, Lilja 4 groove, Lilja 6 groove, and Benchmark 6 grooves and can tell no difference in the amount of travel the rifle recoils when shot from a benchrest free recoil.
I think the only way recoil would be greater is that if the pressure at the muzzle was greater when the bullet left the crown. After all, that's what causes the recoil and that's why muzzle brakes work so well.
My guess would be that if there is indeed a small difference in recoil for a RF barrel of the same weight and contour it would take serious test equipment in a lab environment to record it.
You'll like a Shilen barrel, or Benchmark ,or Lilja, or Broughton. They're all making some great barrels at this time.

Thanks Kent

Looks like you have a nice collection there :)

Carlzone,
I just like to try a lot of different things. The only way to see how an item will perform, is to do it, and see how it works. There are some very fine barrels being made for rimfire rifles at this time and the ammo is better than ever, the scores prove it in rimfire BR. It's a good time for rimfire, in my opinion. Best of luck in your shooting.

Thank you Kent.
I really look forward to this winter. I will try to totally different sets of equipment and compare the results.

A) The 2013 action with Shilen 4 groove, alu stock.
B) Diana 820 from 1991, factory selected barrel, wooden stock.

The Diana is a wild card, but still - it holds the olympic record in 60 shots prone (Atlanta 1996) :)

Recoil is a function of the bore area and the pressure that exists while the bullet is in the bore. Friction caused by rifling has an insignificant effect. Essentially all 22 RF rifles of same weight will have same recoil.
