The Value of a quality recoil lug on its own would be pretty hard to acess.
It would seem reasonable that a lug of uniform thickness is a good
thing. Factory Rem lugs can and do vary. I have seen them nearly
2 1/2 thou difference from top to bottom. They are also softer. I
have checked a few and if I remember correctly 3-4 on Rockwell C.
Sandwiched between a receiver at 30 Rockwell C and a barrel at
18, its reasonable that the lug takes it all. Having said that, I just
took a 40X apart and had to slit the lug with a parting tool to
reduce the tension, as I could not break it free. Once split, it came apart
easily. That particular lug seemed to have a better finish than most.
It may have been ground. It did have a tremendous divit in the
rear face as though it had been tested for hardness. Judging by the
depth, it would have been pretty soft. It also makes no sense to
true an action and then put an irregular lug back on.
