Recoil lug alignment

Getting ready to take the leap into the switch barrel world and am wondering about recoil lug alignment for the Rem 700 action. If the lug is "pinned", does it hold it's position when torquing the barrel back on, or is an alignment tool such as the Kliendendorf still necessary?

I try to pin all of my Rem type lugs but for those that aren't I do something that will probably get me into trouble on the Forum.

I make an index mark on the lug and the action. When screwing on a barrel I try to keep the marks lined up as much as possible. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. When the barrel is nearly tight, I take a lead hammer and gently pound the lug into position. Then, a final twist of the action wrench. It usually stays put.

And just so you know, when I bed a Rem 700 I leave a lot of clearance on the sides, bottom, and front of the lug. It's been my experience that a lug that is a leetle bit out of alignment doesn't hurt a thing.

IF you are going to regurally switch barrels on several Rem 700's the best thing to do is to spend thirty bucks and buy a tool that Brownell's and others offer just for that purpose.

Yes you can pin the recoil lug but it is a precision machining operation and a lot of additional work, unless you have a machine tool you can set up just to do that operation. Otherwise you could very easily not drill the pin hole exactly where it should be and screw up the action face.

I don't bother with the pins anymore. They usually sheared off anyway. Even when greasing the barrel shoulder. What I ended up doing when using a pinned lug was to place a bit of 120 grit lapping compound between the action face and the lug and then there was enough friction to keep the pin from shearing.

I just use an alignment tool now and still use the 120 grit compound.

lug alinement

Am i missing something . Only done a few Remmys but my action wrench has a cutout that alines the lug when tightening.

That cute little pin can shear and then you have a problem
If you'll throw away the pin that comes with some of the recoil lugs and get a grade 8 made in USA dowell pin, you won't have any more problem with the pins shearing off. MSC sells them in boxes of 100 for just a few dollars. I use the 3/32" x 7/16" pins.

Pin it like this and you'll never have an issue. In ten years I've never broken a pin. Not once.

Pinned lug

Pin it like Chad shows. Use the pins Mike specified or use the rollers out of a U-joint as pins. They are Hard!
