Rebarrel question

Can a long action 30-06 Rem 700 be rebarreled/chambered for the short action cartridges (.308)? I just saw a good deal on a used 30-06 receiver and bolt ($200). The barrel is worn out and has some rust. I am thinking of building up a .260.
 
Yes, I'm not sure if it will eject the case all right though,but I'm pretty sure it will,maybe someone else will chime in about the ejection.

It can be done but I think it'd be a hassle and maybe not too cost effective. IMO, you'd be better off getting a beater .243 and then it'd be a simple rebarrel job. Magazine and everything else would fit. My .260 usta be a .243.

I built a hunting rifle for myself using a long action 700 and a Kwik Klip and chambered it for 7mm 08. It works well and no worries about seating the bullets out...
 
Thanks everyone for the info. I will press ahead with my project using the long action.
