Realistic difference- 260AI vs 6.5x47 Lapua

I would like to build a 6.5, but it seems to me that the 6.5x47 Lapua is simply a shortened 260AI with the small primer pocket. What advantage does one have over the other?

I'm no gunsmith

But I just looked at this for about 3 months to make a 6.5 hunting gun and I went with the 6.5x47. After much thought and talking I chose this round due to the fact from all my research you can run the 6.5x47 at higher pressure and still have the option of factory ammo if needed.

There is a movement in the Tactical shooting comp group of a lot of people going the 6.5x47. Now I don't think one is more accurate than the other. And it is a hard call good luck. Both will give you good service.

Run at elevated pressures a 6.5X47 will equal a 260R.

At those same working pressures a 260AI/6.5 Mystic will exceed that performance by 100 to 150fps. I run my Mystic at near 6.5-284 performance.

Cost for brass is about 1/2 to 2/3 for the 308 based wildcat. Lots of supply vs the Lapua. Large primers ensure complete ignition if used in the cold (I live in Canada - gets cold).

You can use 260R ammo in a pinch if the chamber is cut properly. I bet that will be more readily available then any Lapua factory ammo.

Both are equally accurate and run well in most actions. The 30deg Lapua case will run smoother in staggered mags vs the 40deg improved cases, but there is no difference in center feed mags.

If all I wanted/needed was 6.5X47L performance, I would run a 260R. Lower pressure so there is less issues with pressure spikes jamming up the works. Large rifle primer cause it might get cold. Shallower case shoulder angle ensures even smoother feeding. Dirt cheap cases by comparison. Factory ammo in alot more places if that is a concern.
