Reading the wind

Howdy, everyone. As I'm just getting started in benchrest shooting, I have a question about how you adjust for wind. Do you normally adjust by using the windage on the scope, or do you adjust by holding off the bullseye and leaving the scope windage alone? I've done a lot of internet research and have found lots of information about reading the wind, wind flags, etc, but find little information about the methods of adjusting for it.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Not to imply that I know anything but I practice hold off when adjusting for wind. Just my 2 cents. Maybe someone else can give a more detailed answer.

Practice, Practice, Practice. In some cases you can adjust for the condition, other times you hold off ( Kentucky Windage )

Wind, wow! I'm a newbie too, shot my 2nd match on sat. I thought it was rather windy, several flags blew over, one broke. I can't believe how many changes in direction, and speed that happen in 20 min. I was lost..............

I hold off to compensate for the wind. The wind is very switchy here in the NE and unless a prevailing wind condition is very evident, zeroing for the wind is a waste of time and effort. Identify the two or three most prevalent wind conditions then go to your sighters and figure out the proper hold-offs for those conditions. Wait out the strong gusts and be leery of the dead calms. Be patient!!! Lots of shooters rush thinking they will run out of time and will try to shoot the strong wind conditons. But if you get a favorable wind condition that is giving you Xs, run that condition just as fast as you can while watching the flags for any changes. That's the best advise that I can give you.

bill couldnt say it any better , pay attention to the wind before match starts ,you will figure one that you can shoot and wait for it,i shot with tony on saturday and on one target he hadnt shot three score targets in the first 9 minutes and it was blowing, tom was also at match

I guess I'm in the minority here. I sight in every time I sit at the bench. Pick the prevailing condition and sight in for it. You'll do enough holding off as it is for slight changes in velocity and quartering winds. I get really nervous holding the black for a given condition.

Do what works for you.

I hold off and try not to mess with the scope settings. Once you make a change to the scope and wind conditions are changing it just makes it more confusing for me.
If I know that the scope is sighted in, then it's a whole lot easy to adjust for a left to right, right to left, head wind etc.... One thing that I've noticed at least for me I can work a right to left wind better than a left to right.

Ken, I rarely hold more then just outside the 10 ring. I try to shoot the lulls in the wind. The barrels I currently have on my rifles do well at handling the wind.
