RE15 Consistency Problem In A Pair Of 6Dashers

I had two new 6Dashers put together recently and have been having alot of trouble getting them consistent day to day. They both like 33.1 - 33.5 grains of RE15 but need constant adjusting of the powder charge to shoot good.

I shot Varget for 10 years in half a dozen or more different 6BR's with a truckload of different barrel brands and the same powder charge was used in all of them with very little problems at all.

At the recent NBRSA 1000 Yard Nationals the two Dashers shot 2 of the 6 smallest groups fired at the match and then a bunch of 14 inchers to go with them in very good conditions.
Anybody got any ideas?

set your barrel length just like a tuner, get 2 loads to converge by cutting and recrowning.you would be amazed what trimming off a half inch of barrel can do for tune width. just a suggestion. tim in tx

I built a LG Dasher last season, mine seems to prefer Varget. Was Re 15 much more accurate in your rifles? I tested Re 15 and the accuracy didn't knock my socks off so I've stuck with 32.5 gr. of Varget. I plan on testing some VV 540 that I have and trying VV 140. I hear some guys are using H 4895 with success. I suppose that by reading your post that you're more interested in making Re 15 work so you might look at trying a different lof of the primers that you're using. I've heard guys whose opinions I respect saying that new CCI 450s aren't doing as well as the old ones. I have had good luck with some tests of Wolf LR primers and I have a ton of them in SR Mag. They seemed to have pretty good consistency compared to the CCI450s that I have been using. I also have some new CCI 450s but I haven't tested them. While I don't doubt Tim's advice this could save you the hassle before tearing it all apart to do machine work.

Mine shoots Varget real well at 32.7-32.8 grains but my fathers doesn't like it as much. His likes 33.2 grains of RE15 and mine likes 33.5 grains of RE15.What happened is that both guns were shooting real well then all of a sudden they are shooting 10 inches plus and in good conditions to boot.
I received a couple private messages with some suggestions and will do some more testing sunday to see if it all works out.
I just bought 12,000 of the new CCI 450 Magum primers because thats all the store had and so far we have had 4 shots not fire and alot of blanked primers on loads we have been using for 10 years without any troubles. The chronograph numbers look good so we suspect the brand new CCI's are not of the same quality as they used to be.

Just a thought

Lynn, I load for two 17 pound LG's both in 6 BRX. I've mostly used Varget for my barrels and used RL-15 for my son's as both his last two barrel's seemed to shoot better with RL-15. Last season I had to switch lot #'s with Varget and never really got my tune back with the new lot of Varget. Next year I plan on starting out with RL-15 in both rifles.I used to think Varget had better lot to lot consistency than RL-15 but now think the reverse is true after struggling with Varget for two years now.
I realize you are talking about losing your tune with the same lot # of RL-15 so I just wanted to mention something I have found and that is that a load that gives me the best accuracy on a given day may not be the most consistent day to day or match to match. I try to find a load that shoots pretty good everyday instead of a load that shot the tightest group I've ever shot with that barrel. Although, if I start out the season with a new barrel, do my load development before the first match in April my "match" load has changed by the time August rolls around. Just because of the temp. changes from April to August. Short of loading at the range and adjusting for temperature changes I'm not sure how else to do it better. Also, primers do make a difference as has been said in another post. I hate to here about your experience with the new CCI-450's as I use more of that primer than any other and I'm needing to buy some for next year.
At the IBS 600 yd. Nationals at Ft. Pierre S.D. there were mostly 6 Dashers and 6 BRX's used by the top ten finalists. I think I was the only one using Varget. I don't know if that means anything at all but I thought I would mention it as I thought I should have done better than I did.
