I'm building new stock for my anschutz and the existing action screws are not in great shape. Having hard time finding M6-0.75 so I was thinking of just drilling out and re-tap to next larger standard size.

Is there any downside to doing this?

Thanks,
Regis

You're making your stock so your options are probably more open than you think.

When I did the same I used high tensile bolts from an automotive store. A hell of a lot easier to torque up than slotted screws or hex drive screws.

Yes, that's why I was asking if there is any downside. I don't want to make stock fit the screws. Rather the otherway.

Thank you,

I spoke with someone the other day that had drilled his annie out. He said that the action was hard and had broken off a tap in the action:eek:. I've not done it so this is secondhand info, but it might save you a big headache.---Mike Ezell

Anschutz 54 receivers

Hey buddy.

I have some experience with these little guys.

Get out your Ouja board, rabbits foot, and oil of newt before you go tapping an Anschutz 54 action. The front guard screw won't be that big a deal cause the material is dead soft, however the rear one does get some heat treat (closer to the bolt's recoil lug surfaces) and it can be tough as nails.

This is also dependent upon when your receiver was made. Not all 54's are the same and the older ones were heat treated from one end to the other. This always makes it interesting when threading the receiver rings.

If you call Neal Johnson's Gunsmithing, Inc. in Colorado Springs he'll whip you up a set of screws. Just order them a touch long and grind to fit if you don't know your exact length.

The cap screws will use a larger wrench which is a good thing cause the factory ones are kinda prone to stripping out. (shooters using wore out allen wrenches don't help the cause much either)

If you still want to make your own, MSC industrial supply sells the die for cutting the threads. I use a moly based cutting fluid for this as grade 5/8 cap screws tend to be a little "crunchy" on the outside.

Good luck.

Appreciate the info/advice. It will be a couple weeks (work & travel) before I have to actually fit it in stock and bed. I am leaving outside square until I finish bedding though. This Anschutz is a Match 64 not 54 but, I'll use cutting oil if I re-tap.

Thanks again,
Regis

Recess

If you are using pillars, why not just recess the pillar to allow the bedding screw to extend into the action.

Regis,

A 64. Oh, then you want to be very careful if your retapping as they use a smaller screw. (Been awhile since I messed with one of these, but I'm pretty sure it's either a 4 or 5 mm screw)

Small taps and hard holes don't always go so well together. . .

Just be careful and good luck.

M6

it seems standard M6 to me (European!)
if you have trouble finding them, 'll send them to you if you want.
good luck

The last 64 Anschutz I worked on was in 2003 so it's been awhile. I could uh swore they were a 5mm though.

Oh wells.

Good luck OP!

I just measured the action screws on my 64S and they are m5x.8.

Mike,
Thank you. I found 5x0.8 at local hardware store and they fit perfect. I did have to cut to length but, now I have socket head screws front and back that I can properly torque & re-torque when I want to remove stock.
I had been hunting for 5x0.5. The even had 5x0.8 in stainless.

This let me avoid tapping.

Thanks again,
Regis
