Re-barreling Sako TRG 42 -Help please

I'm looking at getting a new .338LM barrel for my Sako. However what would be the longest/heaviest profile (i.e. max weight) barrel this action could support without extra stress or the need for a barrel block? Guessing around a 32" no. 8 heavy profile or is that too much? Also how is the barrel locked into the action, is it a simple tenon thread or is it heat shrunk on like some other european makers do?

All thoughts greatly appreciated. Tiff

I think a n° 8 is too heavy.

I'll put a n° 7, max 28". If you use the Sako bipod, you'll be limited for the profile...

The receiver has a standard thread ( 16 tpi if I remember )

Re-barreling Sako TRG 42 -help please

I did one for a customer a couple of years ago. He was running into copper fouling problems with the factory barrel and had me put on a Hart stainless replacement. My notes show a barrel tenon .9885" long, 1.061" dia, and a 1.5mm thread. The headspace on this one was 1.1235" or .135" above the barrel face. The customer provided the barrel that was slightly heavier than the factory barrel. I do remember spending considerable time on the milling machine modifying the rails of the stock and the bipod to get everything working right with the heavier profile. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply. I should have added I use a harris bipod - so no issues there. It sounds like a 30-32" barrel would not be too much to ask of the action, I have seen many remmy 700's with 28-30" no 7 or 8 tubes on and this thread is nearly 0.3" longer:) Or am I missing something? Please keep your ideas coming. Tiff
