Re#17 Vs Mag pro in 270WSM

At range today shooting 140gr Berger VLDs out of my Mod 70 Classic 270WSM 63.5 Re#17 produced average MV of 3125 with 1"MOA at 100yds as where 71.5grs of Magpro produced Average MV of 3050 and slightly tighter group. Neither showed any pressure signs... So Re#17 has way more energy per grain. I was hoping to produce 3200+ fps.
 
very interested in this load development.

R17 and 4007 SSC and some other new powders were supposed to be for the short magnum. But Lyman load data seems to like R22, which I use for 7mm Mag and 270 Win. Perhaps these powders weren't out before the 49th edition.

I'd try R22. Although 3100fps is pretty good for 140gr when factory loads are 3100-3200fps.
 
Never been to Texas

I never bothered to check listed factory velocities for any of the short mags especially the 270WSM. Maybe I'm asking to much but I want to get as close to a 270 Weatherby mag as I can. I hoping to get 3250-3300 with this bullet.Testing both loads neither showed any pressure signs. Why I want to push the envelope on every cartridge I own must mean I've psychological issues are some thing. But seriously our brave Marine & Army,Navy SEAL's snipers on the front lines make the most impressive long range hits with a 7.62 Nato and its not as flat shooting as my 270 WSM. So maybe I should be satisfied with 3100 FPS ?
 
I just spent a couple weeks with the .270WSM using VArget, RL-17, RL-19, RL-22, H4350, Ramshot Magnum, MagPro, H4831 and all three bullet weights.

I topped out at:
-3000fps 150's
-3100fps 140's
-3200fps 130's

No combination proved to be superior in regards to achievable velocity. No combination jumped out as superior re retained energy @ 600yds, all were right at a ton.

I tested all combinations to destruction, leaving 50-75fps cushion for temperature changes.

All of these velocities could be exceeded "safely" by 150fps using new Winchester cases.........one time.

All of these velocities could be exceeded by 50-75fps on any given day provided one was loading/shooting same day @ same temp.

It is my opinion that the go-to hunting load for this round is the Barnes 130 at 3200fps.

It is truly weird to see half the bullet hanging down into the powder chamber, to have compressed loads when the powder is clear down at the base of the shoulder!

What rifle/bbl length ? Mine is a Mod 70 Classic 24" sporter weight bbl bedded ,Timney trigger.I'm just wondering if MOA is the best I can expect ? I control copper build up.
 
25" custom barrel, Rem clone hunting rifle.

It is my opinion that 1moa is right in the ballpark for a Win 70.

What about using Win 760 or 780 Supreme?

Magnum primers or standard large rifle?

I can do 3100fps in 270 Win with 130gr SST or Nosler Ballistic Tip with 58gr of R22. This is max load in Alliant data, but 60gr is max in other data. Comparing the cases with 270 WSM, it looks like the case can hold more. The Lyman data looks like WSM can hold a bunch more powder.

Anybody done a water capacity test on the WSM cases?

remington action/hart barrel(26 in + brake), H4831SC with 130 Sierra GameKings @ 3325 ft/sec,,,,,,,,,,,110 Sierra ProHunters/H4831SC @ 3550 ft/sec and slightly tighter groups than the 130 gr bullets,,,,,,,,,, and jello makers on whitetails,,,, makes them go DRT (Dead Right There),,,,,,,,,,,,

I gave inaccurate information earlier in this post when I state that "energy of .270WSM is right at a ton at 600yds."

This is not true.

Remaining VELOCITY is just under 2000 (fps) I was misquoting my ballistics table.

Remaining ENERGY is just under 1300 (ft/lb) NOT "near a ton."
