Re 17 burn rate?

I am going to try the new Re 17 powder in a .260 improved with the 130 class bullets, does anybody have any data on the burn rate of it to compair it to other powders? thanks, Ron Tilley

I have read that it falls between H4350 and H4831.

I just shot some of it today in my 6.5x47 w/ a Berger 140 (normally I shoot the 130s and they shoot great), and the velocity was sure there, but the accuracy was not. Hopefully I can tweak the accuracy back to the same I get with the 130s.

I have been thinking about a .260AI, how have you liked it so far, and where did you get dies??

thanks for the reply, its done well, I shoot it at 1000 and 600 and its competitive. my dies are cut off a re-size reamer that I had made at the same time as the finish reamer. I saw a set of Redding custom dies that were for sale on snipershide or 6mmbr not so long ago if you are looking.

Thanks again, Ron Tilley

Hey Tillroot1

Ron put some of that new powder in your 6BR and let me know if its to slow.

Lynn.....

I loaded one round of Dasher ammo with RL17 this evening. Used a Wolf SRM primer, 35.3grs. of RL17, and a moly'd DTAC 115 seated to jump around .020". Out of a clean, cold 30" Krieger .236" bore 8-twist bbl., it chrono'd 2771fps on an overcast 77*F day. The way I see it, you might get as much as another 40fps once the barrel is fouled with moly, as much as 40fps more velocity on a 90+*F day, and maybe another 60fps with 36grs. of powder, which I think is about as much RL17 as I'd care to try to stuff into a Dasher case. Best case scenario, based on these rough estimates, would be around 2900fps. N550 will beat that easily, and gives good enough accuracy to give cleans with high X-counts on NRA HP targets at 600 & 1000yds. I'm saving the rest of my RL17 for the 6x47Ls & 284 Win.

Ron

260AI will get you another 50 fps (2850) over a 260 unless you want three firings out of your cases

I am getting a little better than that with the 140 grain bullets, I just was looking for some extra info on the new powder and with the 130's instead of the 140's. Thanks, Ron Tilley

JUST for Lynn

RL-17 Testing in a Dasher and a 284 August 8, 2008

Please NOTE; Custom single shot actions were used, others may have pressure problems.

Sacramento 100 yard Chronograph test. Elev = 200’ Hum = 56% Temp = 61 degrees.

Five shot groups

BAT action 6BR imp. (UBL) Sierra 107s, CCI-BR4s, Lapua brass. 30” Krieger barrel

LOAD – POWDER – MV -- ES – SD -- GROUP
33.5 ---- Varget -----2995 --- 20 – 07 --- 0.244” normal S107 load.
33.0 ---- RL-17 -----2771 --- 51 – 19 --- 0.357”
34.0 ---- RL-17 -----2831 --- 05 – 02 --- 0.341”
35.0 ---- RL-17 -----2917 --- 17 – 06 --- 0.328”
35.5 ---- RL-17 -----2947 --- 22 – 08 --- 0.299”
36.0 ---- RL-17 -----2990 --- 26 – 11 --- 0.157”
36.5 ---- RL-17 -----3029 --- 18 – 07 --- 0.560”
37.0 ---- RL-17 -----3051 --- 65 – 25 --- 0.422”

NO pressure sighs at all. Could have gone with more powder, 37 grains is not compressed.

BAT action, 284 (Whitley), Berger 180 VLDs, CC-BR2s, Win. Brass, 30” Krieger barrel

LOAD – POWDER – MV -- ES – SD -- GROUP
54.5 ---- H4831 -----2810 --- 13 – 06 --- 0.368” normal LR load
52.0 ---- RL-17 -----2894 --- 16 – 06 --- 0.940”
52.5 ---- RL-17 -----2911 --- 40 – 15 --- 0.418”
53.0 ---- RL-17 -----2940 --- 22 – 08 --- 0.283”
53.5 ---- RL-17 -----2971 --- 14 – 05 --- 0.515”

Some pressure signs above 53 grains, might be too much in hot weather.

Results in both rifles show a need for fine tuning the RL17 load.

Thanks Champ I won't tell anyone. It looks like you'll be shooting 36 grains in your 6mm.
One more quick question for you.How do I read the wind? Everytime I read my wind book I pass out in my recliner.
Thanks Again
Lynn

Jerry,
Thanks for sharing the 284 data - 2800fps is about as fast as I've been able to go with Berger & JLK 180s. Looks like I may have to share my meager supply of RL17 between the 6x47s & 284s - and I just bought another 8lb. jug of H4831...
