Range rods

Hello All
I was looking into purchasing some range rods to begin working on my current rifles. I have both 30 cal and 7mm rifles I was thinking of purchasing the "grizzly type rods" from PTG as they are piloted and fit a wider range of calibers. Also can the pilot bearings used on these "grizzly type range rods" be used on the reamers? :D Thanks Bill

It really depends on what you plan to do with them, to say which is preferred.

Range Rods?

OK, from a shooter and not a machinist, WHAT IS or WHAT ARE RANGE RODS.
Cheers

It is used to align the bore of a rifle barrel in a lathe. A range rod is just a rod with a bushing on the end that you mount in the tailstock of a lathe. You insert the rod into the bore of the gun. As you turn the barrel (by hand) you measure the deflection of the rod with dial test indicators.

Here is a video of Gordy Gritters using one.

Range rods, deltronic pins, long feeler indicators..

Ron there are many ways to skin a cat. With all due respect you will hear about them all on this forum. Some say their way is the only way, the best way etc. I think if the end result is achieved, then the different methods are accademic.

One piece of advice I will give about using piloted rods. Make sure the ID is correct for the OD of the rod. The pilot should be no more than .001 clearance leaving a snug fit of the pilot. The OD of the pilot needs to be within .00005 to .0001 (yes 1/10,000) under the ID of the lands. The range rod should have two bearing surfaces when it is properly seated to depth. This will take out any wobble in the rod. When indicating off of it. in one or two locations simultaniously.

Use of long rods and the tail stock and pre drilling and boring have their places. Again there are many ways to skin a cat.
