Range report! My new Savage 10 FCP.

Took my new Savage 10 FCP w/ the HS Precision stock down to the range today to break in the barrel and try it out. I've glass bedded the action & recoil lug already. I mounted a 20 MOA Warne rail & a SWFA SS 16x scope.

Took me a long time to get the darn thing on paper! I was using some (really) old soft point Federal loads to do the shoot / clean break-in procedure, and let me tell you they were shooting about 8 MOA at 100 yds! No joke! That had me worried...

Eventually I got it to where I could at least see the hits on paper (hours of shoot / clean later) and I got out the box of Federal GMM 175gr SMK that I bought to see if this tube's a shooter. The short answer is yes. I can't wait to work up some handloads!

Anyway, here's a picture of the target. I laid down a pair of ~0.5" 3 shot groups at 100yds, and a ~0.9" 4 shot group at 200yds. (I ran out of bullets!)

This was my first experience with the Super Sniper scope, I bought it based only on reviews I read and claims of epic repeatability & ruggedness. The pro is that this is the first scope I've owned where the parallax numbers are actually spot on for focus at the indicated yardage. The con is that the image isn't as sharp at 200 yds as my Nightforce, but hey- the NF cost $1000 more! (And with groups like that for a factory rifle & ammo, who cares!)

Thanks for the write up - Nothing like a good shooting Savage.

Have the same rifle (Sweet isn't it!?) with an IOR Valdada 4.5-14 scope. Took me a while to find what ammo she likes (Haven't started loading for .308 yet). Any Prvi was close to horrible (Shotgun pattern), Federal GM Match okay, Black Hills Red good, and Hornady Match best. Will try to post a picture later this week.

Cheers,

Mark

It's very sweet. Heavy enough that there's no recoil, but not too heavy to lug around like my 6PPC. Maybe I need to try some Hornady match ammo. I really like the 1.5 lb Accutrigger.

Next time, first sight in at 25 yards, then go to 50, then 100. It's a piece of cake that way. ;)

Agree. Put one of those big red "Meatball" dots in the center of target at 25 yards and eyeball bore sight it. Then 50 & 100 as abintx sez.

Cheers,

Mark

I actually tried that, but my RO yelled at me. We're only allowed to shoot into the berms so the closest I could get with my targets was 50 yds...

Update, things are going well with this rifle. I've developed a repeatable 5 shot 1/2" load with 200gr SMKs & 47.5gr RL17 at 2630 fps. Win brass, BR2 primers. It's about 2 grains below I see any sort of pressure signs.

I'm also working on a good 190 SMK load also with RL17- around 49gr it's looking good at 2725 fps, I still have some testing to do around the node though. Here's some pics.

How much weight for the gun with scope. I used to look for a Savage 112 when I was younger, never found one for sale. I bought BR guns instead. Nice shooting.

Stephen,

According to my bathroom scale the whole rig w/o the bipod attached is 11 lbs. All in all I'm really happy with it.
