Questions about Leupold 24X scope ...

I have a 24X Leupold scope (1" tube) that I'd like to have converted to 40X. Is that possible? If so, who would you recommend for this project? If so, what would it cost?
 
FWIW, the Leupold is worth more in it's original 24X state than it would be after being boosted. There are plenty of 36X Weavers and Leupolds available and you could always buy a 40 Leupold Competition. I would sell the 24 to a varmint hunter and buy a 36X personally. Or save your pennies and buy a 40 Leupold. Boosting is pretty much a thing of the past.

I thought that might be the case. It has been harder and harder to find a qualified non-OEM to work on scopes, and some scope projects (like this one) just don't seem to be practical. I've had Leupold add target turrets to special scopes and they do good work, but they're quite expensive. I may keep this scope "as is" just to troubleshoot questionable scopes.

Now you are being sensible. that is a funny situation for a BR shooter. ;>) :.(
 
Actually, I'm not a formal benchrest shooter. I figured that if anyone is especially skilled at working on scopes a competitive benchrest shooter would know who he is. I build tactical tack drivers (mostly in .308 or 300 Win. Mag.) My interest in formal benchrest competition is limited, and it's not enough to convince me to pay that much for a paper puncher.

However, if I ever run into the right group of shooters that could change.

Larry,

I would suggest you try to attend the "Winds of Manitee" match next spring. You will meet a few of the really good BR shooters in the country there, as some are residents in the area and the rest are Snow Birds. You may well be "converted' after you see what can be done w/ the right equipment. Be sure to look up 2 people particularly, George Kelbly and Larry Costa.

larry; I am a benchrest shooter, forsay, if you ever go to a benchrest shoot and meet some of the shooters you will be suprised at how friendly and helpful they are. and it's FUN.

The Manatee range is beautiful. Even though it's 3 hours away, I've been there several times to shoot 1,000 yards. However, it is without a doubt the most windy 1,000 yard range I've ever seen. Threading your shots past several burms makes the wind come from all directions at the same time. The last time I was there, the wind flag propellor sounded like a turbine.

Thanks for the information. I am reminded about my golden rule of saving money in this sport. "Never compromise to save money on shooting equipment, because it will wind up costing too much in the long run." That 24X Leupold has been a good reliable scope comparator for years. I guess I'll keep it for that purpose.
