I am getting one in 204 Ruger in the next week, just curious what COL's[cartridge overall length] with your reloads have you guys been using.

List your favorite loads, brass, primer, powder, bullet, neck size, etc...

Are the throats short, medium, or long??

Thanks....can't wait for mine to come in.

:cool::cool:

anyone?

Now I know there are some guys that have a XR-100 in 204 Ruger..

Ok, more specifically, I will be loading 35 gr. Bergers. My previous loads had a relatively long COL because I had an Encore with a long throat.

Just curious on your experiences with the XR-100.

Thanks..

I have a XR-100 in .204 Ruger.
It has an extremly long throat, using the 1/2 the caliber rule for minimum seating of a bullet, I seat the bullet .515 from the rifling.
I tried 32 gr. Sierra and Hornady bullets, 1 inch or bigger groups.
The 40 gr. Sierras shot around 1/2 inch consistently and the 40 gr. Hornady shoot around 1/2 to 5/8 inch. I shoot the Hornady's because they are more explosive on prarie dogs.
I shoot a Win. SR primer and 25.7 grs. of Benchmark, the top load in the Hodgdon Annual Manual.
I use Win. brass and Redding Competition dies with a .226 neck bushing.
It shoots good enough for prarie dogs but will get a new barrel in the future with a much shorter throat.
I replaced the trigger with a Jewell, I have 3 XR-100's and the triggers were awful, the only comparison with the 40X trigger that I have is they look the same if a picture is taken of them.

Wow..that's too bad about the stock trigger.

is the stock trigger pre-2006 or the newer one?

I looked at the Rifle Basix triggers and was curious.

Thank you for the response.

I assume all the triggers will be the older style since the XR-100 is no longer produced.
The rifle basics trigger is a very good hunting trigger, it is not a Jewell but then of course nothing else is.
I have run into the same problems with the Model 7 trigger, in many cases it appears the trigger pivot is drilled too far back in the housing. This causes the trigger to actually have to cam the sear up before releasing, makes for very inconsistent pulls. I have not had this trouble with a 700 factory trigger, they just needed polished and adjusted, 18 oz. safe triggers were easy to attain.

LiveToHunt2008: Pardon my slow reply I have been off in the mountains and high valleys of Montana dry fly (hopper!) fishing, Big Game scouting and Varmint Hunting!
I hope you become HALF as happy with your XR-100 in 204 Ruger as I am with mine!
Great trigger, excellent stock design and wonderful accuracy!
I could not be happier with my XR-100's!
I am confident you will find that your upcoming XR-100 will have a long throat.
Don't panic!
That is NOT the end of the accuracy world!
My throats in all 3 of my XR-100's are long.
They all shoot exceptionally well for all stock factory Rifles though!
I am shooting Sierra 32 grain BlitzKing bullets in my 204 as of now. But in the past I have used 40 grain factory ammo, 32 grain factory ammo, handloads with 35 grain Bergers, handloads with various 40 grainers and handloads with various 32 grainers.
My go to handloads as of now consist of Hornady brass, H 4895 powder, Federal 205 M (match) primers and the afore mentioned 32 grain Sierra BlitzKing's.
I have a Leupold 8.5x25 variable scope on this XR-100 and the last two sight in verification groups (5 shots at 100 yards) with the above loadings measured .322" and .402" respectively!
Best of luck with your new XR-100 in 204 Ruger!

Sounds good VarmintGuy. On the 35 grain Bergers...what is your COL?

I am picking up some H4895 pushing some 35 gr. Bergers.

It has been awhile since I have had a really accurate rifle.

Years ago...as in 1992, I had a custom bench gun built in 1958.

Mauser 98 single shot on a Fajen stock, 2 oz. Canjar trigger,
29", #8 contour Douglas barrel in 25-06.

My pet load was 59.0 grains of IMR4831 pushing a Sierra 75 gr. HP at 3900 fps...this baby shot 1/2" groups at 200 yards....longest confirmed kill on g'hog was 627 yards...after 2 "sighters"..

On top sat a 15X Varminter Unertl in recoiless mounts...

Man...........I wish I hadn't got rid of that rifle....
:(:(

Anyways.....I will post pics of my new baby when it arrives!!

Kansasvet: Am I reading your posting correct where you state you are seating an unknown weight bullet .515" from the leades of the rifling of your XR-100?

LivetoHunt2008: I have owned a number of Unertl Ultra-Varmint scopes in both 12 and 15 powers.
Those were (are!) great scopes optically and reliability wise.
I only have one Unertl scope left these days and its an amazingly clear BV-20 model!
I bet those 75 grain Sierra's were "smokin" coming out of that 29" barrel!
And congrats on that 627 yard shot!
Good for you and the Mauser single shot Rifle!
I will figure out that C.O.A.L. measurement for you tomorrow - I am exhausted after 5 days of dawn to dusk scouting, fishing and Varminting!
What scope do you plan on using on your XR-100?
More later

VarmintGuy reported that the leades in all of his XR100s' were long. My .223 is extremely short! Guess my barrel was made by a different shift that day. Using my Stoney Point Comparitor to set lengths, factory ammo is up on the rifling with 55 grainers. Don't get me wrong, the gun really shoots well and hate to hear that Remington has discontinued the model. Has anyone tried the new triangular shaped barrel?

Varmintguy:

Sorry about the delay in replying, it has been a few days since I looked at this posting.
I am shooting a Hornady 40 gr. V-Max.
Since it is a single shot I think the .102 of bullet bearing surface in the case neck is sufficient to hold the bullet.
Sorry about the confusion, sometimes I know what I want to say but the keyboard doesn't?

Pics as promised:

I have yet to shoot this baby!

LivetoHunt2008: Well I sure hope your Rifle shoots as well as it looks!
And you are quite the photgrapher by the way.
I enjoyed all the pictures of the Rifle and its scope and accoutrements.
I understood them all except for the shot of the port side (left) of the scopes sun shade - is that a trajectory or reference chart on the side of the scope?
Be sure to let us know how it shoots.
How is the triiger by the way?
And again best of luck with the XR-100.

is that a trajectory or reference chart on the side of the scope?

Yes it is.

I go to JBM's trajectory calculator, type in my B.C., velocity, zero range, yardage increments, maximum range...and then it 'spits' out the numbers..

http://www.amasci.com/~jbm/ballistics/traj/traj.html

I then copy and paste to Excel....format it to my liking and print it out on photo paper.....take some clear packing tape...and I'm ready to slay some Ohio g'hogs..

How is the triiger by the way?

At first it varied between 20 oz. and 2 & 1/2 lbs??? on my RCBS trigger weight scale.

I dry-fired it about 500 x's....now it is consistently 18 - 20 oz.

the thing is....bow season starts Saturday!!
