Question from a beginner...

Guys I would like to start shooting in some benchrest matches, and wanted to ask a question or two. I have my own 300 yard range that I shoot on frequently, and I build a few rifles each year (mainly hunting rifles) but have never shot competitively or even been to a match at an organized range. I have a 6mm Rem 40XBR that my father had built in the 70's by the REM custom shop, that hasn't had 100 shots thru it. It shoots in the low 2's as is, and I know I wouldn't be able to compete against a true BR rifle, but I thought I could shoot it awhile just to get some matches under my belt and give me time to build a competitive rifle. My main question is what other equipment would someone starting out need besides a good rifle? Just from looking around I think Rachel's Glenn is the closest range to me that holds matches, and I plan to try and make it over to the next one just to observe and get a feel for how things are done. Any advice you guys can give is greatly appreciated. ~Jackson

Jackson, sounds like you already have a good plan. By all means, go over to Mickey Coleman's place, Rachel's Glenn and get acquainted with him. He won't steer you wrong.

I agree with Gene, you are on the right track. Go to a match or 2 and see what everyone uses and you might even pick up some used stuff. On a forum you are going to get enough differing opinions from some who don't even compete that it will only confuse you more than ever. Ask most of your questions after the match or before the match, as the best ones to answer are the busiest during a match.
 
Dublin can't be too much farther from you than Selma, if Mickey isn't starting soon enough for you. There will be people from all over the eastern U.S. at the Shamrock.
 
I didn't think about Dublin. That would be in driving distance as well. I am right on the GA/AL line due west of Albany. When will the Shamrock be?
 
The club also has monthly matches with classses for all kinds of guns. They use a standard score target and vfs format for this. I may be wrong, but I believe it's the 3rd Sat of each month. You can contact Bill Culpepper, at 478-274-1284 for information. These are good matches to start with. In fact a Dr. from Albany Ga. shoots most months in these matches. His name is Gil Kleman. When is the next match at Rachel's Glenn? I definitely would like to go over. I am also gonna try to make it to the shamrock as well. I appreciate the comments. ~Jackson

It's the first weekend in April. We'll shoot all four guns (5 shot unlimited) at 200 yards. No bench rotation. Come on over. You'll have a great time. I promise.
 
Question for beginner.

Hey " enter that match. The 6br is no slouch. Those early 40xbrs can really shoot. Maybe all you need is a bedding job , on that rifle , to make it shoot a bit tighter. those Early 40xbrs were built by walker and stekls crew
Mine in 6/47 shot extremely well mickey can fix you right up on a bedding job> good luck and welcome to the crew"''''

It's chambered in 6mm remington, and not 6br. I haven't really played with loads much, and dad only shot it a few times, and It came with a test target that grouped .219" ofcourse I guess it is possible that I might could shrink those groups a little by experimenting with some loads and good bullets. Redoing the bedding is something I also haven't thought about. I definitely appreciate the advice and warm reception.
