Question for Rem. 40-X Shooters/Owners

In a previous post I reported that I noticed after a new mounting on a CMP 40X HB, and changing scopes on my 40 XRBR that both guns were basically shooting 9” low and 9” to the left (at 50 yds) with the scope optically centered. I am using Kelbly rings and bases on both. That post was answered by saying that basically the receiver is slightly off center due to the heat treating process. For those of you that shoot benchrest with a 40-X what bases and ring set do you use? Should I be concerned that I need to make that much of a sight adjustment? Thanks in advance for any input.

i use a leupold one piece windage adjustable base, shimmed a little.
mine was like yours, i use leupold rings as well.

Ed, tomc has seen the results, since new years 4 cmp 40x mounted with #35 and #36 weaver bases. in all 4 just pulled the scope with rings attached and placed on another rifle. never took more than 10 shots to zero, maybe I got the good ones and you got a warped one. this is your 3 thread on different forums about this. whats your point? everyone gives you the same answer what answer are you looking for? Tomc is online right now and he can tell you as I called him from the range in all 4 instances I spent no more than 20 mins. at the range on each rifle.

My point, if you read this question and fully understood what I asked, was is a 9" sight adjustment considered to much for serious benchrest shooting or should I get different mounts to try to maintain a near as a optical center as possible. By the was this was noticed on both the CMP 40-X's that I bought and my 40 XRBR that I bought 11 years ago. So is a common problem.

question for 40x

Millett rings took care of that problem for me.
I use them with all factory rifles .
They just don't get them right at the factory'''t

Ed, I'd say 9" both ways is too much off from mechanical zero and hard to overcome with your turret adjustments. If you exit all the vertical you may not have enough left on the windage side, it's like a roll of paper towels, thighten up one side nothing left on the other. i don't think this is unique to 40x, could be issue with any action.Burris rings are one cure, shim just the rear base is a possiblity for you to get your verticle fixed and maybe then your scope will handle the windage. Thanks, Douglas

Ok guys thank you for your input. My concern was adding weight. I shoot IR 50/50, and as you know the 40-X is a heavy gun to begin with. That is why I went with the Kelbly rings and bases to try to keep the weight down. But there is on way to adjust them for windage and shimming for elevation would but the rings out of alignment with each other.

Thanks,

Ed

Weight is certainly the issue.

I struggled with your same problem all last year. Davidson bases, Kelbly rings, and a Weaver 36x that was pretty much maxed out windage and elevation wise to get a zero. I doubt I had 10 clicks left on the windage.

For a couple of reasons, I'm having that rifle restocked and will be able to go with this setup when it's done.

The 2 sets of pos-aligns with the Sig rings will hopefully let me keep the zero real close to the optical center. That is, if the scope will hold a zero after being cranked to it's max for the last year.

sorry Ed, did not understand what you were asking.should of asked before jumping. yes 9" at 50 yards is too much. if there not within 2 or 3" they get lapped.

and correcting that 7 inch offset by lapping rings means the scope will flop around.

40 x

You may want try using the Leupold Dual Dovetail rings and bases,on many Rem 700 actions I have found that by reversing the front base and ring you can correct a lot of mounting problems, this would be the quickest fix.
The next step wpould be to change to the burris rings with leupold bases.

I have found in 90% of the 40X’s I have mounted scopes that the bases and the rings are the problem.
Weaver especially! I will bet that if you rotate your bases one at a time and swap your rings front to back your alignment will move to something different than the 9 & 9 you have now. If it gets worse then rotate both bases and see what you get.

Now for the question that which I do not feel anyone here has answered!
9" sight adjustment IS NOT considered to much for serious benchrest shooting so do not worry about it! ~

Doug,

Thank you for the input. Especially the part about the 9" sight adjustment not being to much. I went with the Kelbly rings and bases (also Davidson), because of the weight and the fact that the rings are build on CNC equipment. So I figured that alignment would be perfect and the need for laping should not exist. I will try rotating things aroung and see if that makes a difference. The thing is/was I basically got the same results on two CMP 40-X HB's using all Kelbly, and a 40 XRBR using Kelbly and Davidson. So in my mind rotating things around will or may not have any effect.

I use single strap BKL rings on all my benchrest rifles & my guess is that the Kelbly’s rings are close to the same quality.
I would never use steel or double strap rings. I do use Warne steel bases on all my 40X’s! If Davidson bases are the same quality as Weaver’s then there could be a problem.
Here are some more thoughts. Do not over tighten the rings on the scope or on the bases. This will induce stress & change your POA. If you rotate the bases then redo the rings!
When you tighten the straps do it equally on both sides and in increments. Both side to side and front rings to back rings.
Trying to Lapp a good set of rings and bases that have been properly matched and mounted will always do more harm than good.
About the only thing I sometimes do is shim the rear base .003 .004 for fine tuning elevation.
