Question for bullet makers.........

Was wondering if y'all could answer a few questions.......
Let's say you are getting ready to make a 1000 bullets.........

Also when I use the term measurement I'm talking about measuring the length of the bullet from base to ogive using a Davidson Seating Depth Checker. All numbers are examples.

1) how long does it take to make a 1000 bullets?
2) if you made them all without stopping would they all measure the same?
2b) what are the reasons a box of bullets might vary in measurement?
3) if you made 250 at a time would that make them vary any?
4) lets say out of the 1000..... 500 measure 0.320 and the other 500 measure 0.318 ...... Are you going to be able to see the difference on paper?
5) how big of a difference in measurement do you think it will take before you noticed a difference on paper.
6) would you recommend sorting bullets by measurement or is that overkill for 100/200 yard matches?

The way we are measuring seating depth to the millionth of an inch now :) I was just wondering if any of this would make a difference

#1....2 hrs. if using trays 3+ if not #2.....if lube and core seating is correct then yes #2b....no see #2 #3..... no #4....I would prefer to see .001 variation, doubt .002 will matter #5.... That is a good question, as before I try for .001 variation so never have tested #6.... if you think it helps than go for it I would think its overkill....After all of this I am not a big fan of that style of ogive checkers I would use something cut with chamber reamer and even that is iffy slight change in pressure will give you a couple of thousands variation...

1) I don't remember exactly but if you get an average of how much time it takes to do a press stroke and multiply that by 3000...then add the time it takes to cut the lead wire, wash the cores, wash the jackets, allow both to dry, stuff the cores into the jackets...etc...

2) Yes, they would all weigh and measure the close to the same (not exactly the same) but only if you were using jackets selected for that result. If you weigh Sierra bullets you'll find that they all weigh the same and I don't know how they do that - magic of some sort.

2b) The answer to this question could be anything.....

3) Maybe...but not much if you didn't change anything. Temperature would be the only reason for a change....maybe the person doing the mashing...er...press stroke could make a difference.

4) I don't think so but others do.

5) I don't know and won't guess on this question.

6) I personally believe that sorting bullets is a waste of time for several reasons. The main reason is that if you can't win right out of the box you need to change something...maybe it ain't the bullet. The second reason is that it takes a long time and you get so many differences - which leads to so many decisions.

7) Yes, you didn't ask this question but those two bullets you showed me was something I wouldn't shoot if I knew the difference ahead of time. Sorry I didn't say that! They might shoot as well as any bullet made but as soon as you had a shot that went against the wind you would automatically think......BULLET.

bullets

George.............Wilbur .....too............and others who will submit............thank you for your learned replies....... this site is invaluable when it comes to tech.info...... thank you all who share information......

Alot of work there !!! Wouldn't this be similar to heavy and lite
cases. More pressure with heavy cases, less with lite cases. Yet most
say don't adjust for it. With bullet length , base to ogive should
stay the same regardless, unless neck tension is different.(loose
and tight). You would have more or less bullet in the case neck
which might change pressure with consistant seating depth.
I am new to this game. Did not know what a 6ppc was this time two years ago.
Alot to learn in this sport. I use my time on things I can control and forget the
rest (Garbage).

Let's exageratte the question even more. let's say you are making bullets from the same die and they suppose to measure a inch but for some reason some come out measuring 1/2 inch what caused this and if they were mixed up would the 1/2 inch bullet go in the group that the inch bullet went in too? Again all made from the same die and again these are exageratted numbers just used for examples. So would it be best to sort them? Just like the ones that vary a couple thousandths should you sort them also?

Wilbur, Nobody really cuts and squirts cores anymore. So wash jackets and cores lube and load...

First question what jackets are you using? All jackets are not equal and CAN cause the differences you are talking about. For further discussion if you wish call me I do not spend to much time on here much any more just kind of look every now and again. just to busy :) 618 420 5473 George

Is everybody buying cores from Charlie? I know I would! Core making is for the birds!!

Yep.
Charlie has a good set up............

As Lowell Hottenstein has told me and others. "Just shoot em".
Joe Krupa and Lowell both agree. Buy the best equipment you can afford. No sense in paying twice for the stuff. Front and rear rest, rifle, barrels, tools, brass(especially brass. Call Ron Hoehn. everyone agrees on that...), ...........

Charlie Hood has taken the work out of making bullets. Charlie is definitely the way to go for cores in my opinion.
