Question for 52 Guru's

Were any of the Model 52's made with left hand actions? Any idea whether this makes them more or less valuable?

Several ssmiths converted them but they were not offered from the factory in LH. One in LH is worth a premium over a comperable RH unless the RH happened to be one of the wierd rarities that need to be factory original.

Thanks...I suspected as much. I guess a LH stock is the best you can do. My son has the bad? luck to be left handed and a junior smallbore shooter.

Look at the Martini, MKIII if he will ever need to go scope. MT Guns usually has them and they made LH stocks to go with an ambi friendly action.

Check which eye is your sons dominate. Most likely his left. But if he happens to be right eyed it maybe a good time as a youngster to change. I do everything left except shoot because I am right eye dominate. I started right hand shooting when I was 12 and joined a junior club. By the time I started squirrel hunting at 13 I could shoot either way. Now it would be difficult to shoot left. Funny thing is my son is right handed in everything he does but shoot. He is left eye dominate. One of his sons is the same way. Rich

He's left eye dominant. I was hoping otherwise, but no dice. He has gotten pretty used to using a RH action with a club-owned russian rifle (not sure of the make), but I'd like to find a decent Model 52 Winchester for him. That's the rifle I shot in High school and college and I loved it.

1413 Anshultz

I have a 1413 anshultz with right bolt, and left hand thumbhole stock. I
am told this was purchased new this way. But I have not found it in
any old catalogs.

I have looked at Anschutz rifles, and most can be had with LH stocks. The Junior has an ambidexterous stock, but he is too far along for that level of rifle. They do make LH action rifles, but not until you get into the uber expensive range (international rifles). I think a nice Model 52 or an Anschutz 1903 would be a good rifle for a junior to shoot from 12 yrs thru high school, so that's kind of what I'm looking for. I guess the 1903 would be easier to get accessories for, othewise I think they are about the same as shooting accuracy goes.

Left hand Stock

I put my 52D in a custom LH Thumbhole Stock. Works great. I also shoot my other 52D in a McMillan BR Stock, lefthanded. No problems.

Same here

I also have a warning pop up that say's the site is not safe. Of course it's been doing that for two days now on almost every link I try to go to.

I second the 1413 Anschutz!

I have an Anschutz set up the same way. It has what I understand to be a factory bolt adaptor. The bolt knob is machined thru, and the adaptor fits in and wraps under the trigger guard. Works fine.

I see these periodically on gunbroker.com, matter of fact, I saw one a couple of weeks ago. I have had to adapt to right hand guns all my life, this works better.

The Martini is a good idea too! One of these days I'd like to get a lefty in one of those as well.

I have had a Win 52b, I still have a Rem 37, and a couple other interesting target rimfires. The Annie mentioned above is far more comfortable for me, as a left hander.

Hope that helps, but everyone is different. I got beat in an auction last summer on a custom, Roy Dunlap left hand action built around a Win 52 bolt with a left hand everything. There are great rifles out there, but hard to find. The Annie I talked about can be had for about the price of a good 52.

Hope your son does great!

He is doing quite well for only shooting about 4 months. I am amazed at how things have changed in competitive shooting since I did 3-position some 40 years ago. We used Winchester 52's and Anschutz 54's back then. Now, there seems to be more rifles to select from, but less quality, and the older match rifles are really selling at a premium when you can find them.
The CMP program has an Annie 1903 with adjustable stock (the new style without the fore end accessories) for $1,250 which seems like a good deal, since an older 54 or 52 C, D or E go for that much or more.

question for 52

I had the same problems years ago.
No left hand actions .
I shot left handed with the right handed 52.
easy reach over with left hand open bolt, roll right insert ammo.
close bolt with left hand roll left.
It works well you just need practice

Preference

Although I am a natural righty I was trained to shoot both ways by a very sharp Gunnery Sargeant. I prefer to shoot a bolt left rifle from the bench as it seems I can maintain my sight picture while loading my next round and it requires less effort. Shouldering the rifle on the right, using my left hand to cycle the action and reload that is. God only knows if there is any value to this and he ain't tellin'! Best of luck to the lad, Guy
