Question About Shimming Scopes

I am going to need between an extra 20 and 30MAO elevation on a new scope set up for long range plinking.

The rifle is a Sako M591 with the integeral tapered dovetails and the mounts & rings are Optilock 34mm...

I believe the correct course of action is to get a 20MOA or similar base, but I don't think any are available for the Sako action.

Could I use a shim between the rear opticlock ring and the mount base? I think a .025 thickness would get me in the right ball park..

I realise the rings are no longer parrallel, but as the Opticlock have plastic inserts, I am wondering if they would "loose the difference" so to speak?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

I've never had a set of these Optilock rings in my hand but they look as though they function in a similar fashion to the Burris rings with their rotating insert. The Burris rings do work as advertised and they would accomplish your ends. If the Sako's rotate the same then they should work.

Now, regarding the shimming, I'm guessing that you intend to back the ring base up in the dovetail and slip something underneath? Not ideal, but it should work....

I don't see a problem.

Correct..

As far as I am aware, the Sako's inserts are not offset in anyway, unlike the Burris, nor can you buy any additional offset inserts for them either, which is why I am looking at shimming..

I suppose that if the worst came to the worst, once the shim was installed and the mounts & rings are set up with the insert in place, I could "lap" the plastic inserts if needs be?

Regards,

Peter

No need to lap as the inner ring pivots to follow the scope tube. BETTER than lapping.

If the inner ring does NOT pivot???? Then all bets are OFF! It does not need to be eccentric but it must pivot.
