purchasing a new lathe

Hey fellow shooters Scott had posted earlier in the year about the trouble he was having with getting a Grizzly lathe. I'm having that same frustrating problem every time they tell me a date that the lathe is going to be in. When that time comes they push it back two weeks or a month. Happened three times already. I was going to purchase the big gunsmithing lathe. I don't mind spending a little more to get a realy good machine. I feel the heaver machine will serve me better.

Anybody have any suggestions and experience about wich other lathe I could go with that has super close tolerances.

Any help or suggestions send them my way.

Thanks
Jackie

Jackie;

I ordered the G0509G after talking to Gordy Gritters at the Shot Show. He was demonstrating it and I was able to closely watch and check it out first hand.. That was enough for me. It's a great machine and I am still waiting. The promised delivery date was April. I'll keep waiting. It is exactly what a gunsmith needs...

Good luck
Jerry

Cancel your order. They've already violated their contract with you. There are so many used lathes on the market that it will make your head swim. Paul just got a Clausing Colchester 15 X 50 for $5,000.00 and that included a lot of tooling. He's looking at a $35,000.00 lathe in good shape. This bad economy has small shops going out of business and there are lathes, mills, etc. galore. You don't have to buy something that big but the option is there. There are also tons of smaller lathes to be had at a good price. Delivery can be immediate if you have a truck. You might have to wait two or three days if you don't have a truck. They want to sell these machines and get their money. Think about it.

Thanks FB;

I have a fairly well equipped machine shop, so the G0509G isn't really an absolute necessity. I am willing to wait. I have a project that I am going to start latter this fall, and I will dedicate this lathe to it totally. You are right about the economic climate...

The smaller gunsmith lathes (G4003G) are already on the sea and scheduled to start arriving beginning of next month. They will continue to ship one container every two weeks - that is as fast as they can make and inspect them.

The larger ones (G0509G) are leaving next week and a container every two weeks until they catch up with our back orders.

They will be shipped in priority date of orders placed, and I don't know what the poster is talking about "violating the contract". We do not charge the customer's credit card until we ship, so there is no cost for having one on order and the delivery dates are approximations. The dates I am giving you now are fairly certain as I just checked factory communications before making this post. However, be aware that as soon as they come in, we ship after we are satisfied with them.

Jerry - thanks for the order.

I know were thier is a Harrison

For a lot less.. Also, their is a Harrison AA for a bit more. Let me know, for I tell you this! All of Detroit is on sale. Bridgeman machinery is the outfit. The ship to anywhere.

I bought a small lathe from them. (Rockwell 10") Their ph# is 1-313-366-1060.

Paul bought his Clausing-Colechester. The one fellow Richard Trimstra is a gun nut. Ask for Dick. Dave Bridgeman is a great guy, too.

Thanks. It doesn't get better than that when it comes to knowing a company is paying attention to it's customers.

I hope you will have one in the showroom I can look at when my wife and I come up to the tent sale.

Thanks guy for all your advice. I think I'm going to call Grizzly tomorrow and see what they say the new arival date is. Kinda had my heart set on the Grizzly. Jerry had mentioned that he had spoke to Gordy Gridders at the shot show. I have taken some of Gordys gunsmithing classes and spoke to him about the bigger smithing lathe he spoke very highly of it. So I think I'm going to wait it out for a little while. I think it will be worth it. And back to Gordy Gritters Gordy offers some top notch hands on gunsmithing classes. I have taken many over the years to see all the different ways of doing things trying to come up with my own way that fits me. Gordys classes are the very best one I have ever attended. I believe what sets Gordys apart from the others is that he donesn't mind showing you some of the little secrets. My oppinion, a must for the reloader, shooter, plinker that wants to know how everything works together. Truely one of the best. GO GORDY.

Thanks

Jackie - The information I posted above is as up-to-date info. as you are going to get. The computer dates that the Grizzly operators will refer to may not be that current.

Oh, and I completely agree with you about Gordy. He is one hell of a gunsmith! I use him exclusively and he has chambered all the barrels that I set several National records with, and the two barrels I will be shooting at the F-Class World Championship in a couple of months in England representing the US Team. He is not insecure and shares information freely.

I've logged 24 barrels chambered in a G4003G. I have never had any problems with it. All barrels shoot well. Just finished this 30BR the other day, and it shoots tiny groups.

The Grizzly, Harbor Freight, Precision Matthews, Jet, Birmingham, etc lathes all come from China and are all late getting here right now.

There is also a delay on primers and Gold, but they don't come from China.

I got a grizz G4016 about 6 years ago. Only problem I had was with the motor that was fixed for free out of warranty. Easy to drill and tap the out board spindle to make a spider. Replaced the toolholder with an import aloris type holder. I purchased a Buck chuck but found the one that came with the lathe to be just as good and the buck sits on the shelf. I chamber through the head stalk so no need for the roller tips on the steady rest. Great lathe for the price. Just my 2 cents.
