PT&G Reamer, Between unhandy and impossible

to change the pilot. I received a 17 Remington reamer today and the pilot is held on with a piece of wire in a groove. It is not a clip that can be taken off and put back on. I had to make a smaller pilot and when I put their wire back on I couldn't get it as small as the pilot and I didn't want it marking the rifling. I wound up with a bread wrapper wire twist with a couple wraps and got the job done. The reamer from them before had a screw in the end to hold the pilot on. Are they all made like that now? PITA  Kenny

That's not good, I have several of their "removable pilot" type.

I guess now, removable, doesn't mean you can put it back on?

This is a problem for me, I'll have to change my procedure, as I've been using the same pilot on my range rod, as each reamer.

I just ordered a 30 BR from them, will advise how it comes fastened.

PT&G pilots

In calibers smaller than 17 the screws disapear and the wire clips appear.

Most reamer makers don't make removable pilots for reamers 20 caliber and smaller.

Do you want some cheeze to go with that whine?

I'd contact PT&G. There must be a reason for the wire retainer.

You said you had to make a smaller pilot bushing and it is smaller than the wire thingy?? Sumpin' fishy here.

"Sumpin' fishy" is right. Kenny can't replace a wire clip retainer but he can use "bread wrapper wire twist with a couple wraps"???

I'd like to see a photo of that!

Jerry, You give me an idea. A small blue gill hook would have made a good retainer. Kenny

I use a piece of lead wire that's squirted from the core forming die to hold on the removable pilots for .17's. Wrap it around and pinch it off. It works well and is easily replaceable. I don't imagine there is enough diameter under the pilot to be able to tap for a screw to hold the pilot in place.

Thanks Mike, I think I will store a length of fine solder with that reamer. Kenny

#002 Nitrile rubber "0" ring......................Don

Groove vs screw...

...common for carbide reamers too. It's a matter of being able to drill and tap when the amount of material is insufficient or too hard.

To add to the already mentioned ideas for retaining the bushing I use #30 copper wire in the groove.
