I bought a .177 Discovery to mess around with.

Well...the trigger is terrible. Lousy stock. crummy airsoft type sights. Not very good engineering in the barrel/breech attachment department. The pump is actually way better built than the gun.

When I cleaned the bore, I could only see a faint trace of rifling. I slugged the bore and it stuttered and scraped all the way through except for the last 3 inches...where it didn't even feel any resistance.

I tore it down and deburred the whole thing.

Put it together and shot some groups with open sights at 25 yards.

And...

I could not believe the thing would shoot that good. About 1/2" groups.

I put a cheap 6X scope on it and shot it some more. The dang thing shoots really well...crappy trigger and all.

Not as good as my benchrest Anschutz 8002 mind you, but I am really shocked at how good it shoots.

SO... I think it's a good deal. Parts are cheap (I ordered a new barrel for it and it was total $12.87 including shipping. I'll see if it looks any beter and if so, I'll swap it out.

It seems to shoot best at around 1800 psi down to 1100 or so psi. Then 50-60 pumps and it' back to full fill. I also have a scuba tank to fill it.

Look at that website link above. There is lots of info on there about the rifle. Some good...some bad. If I had looked at the rifle closer, I would never had bought one.

Benjamina Discovery

Hoser,

Thanks for this view of the situation. The company ad clip makes it look like "the one and only". I hooked up with the earlier mentioned web page and you are the only one that spells it out. I was about to swallow the bait and you saved me from a lot of frustration.

You would think that one more step in the manufacturing process, deburring, would be to the manufacturers benefit.

Thanks,

A few things to also consider about Discovery

It's the first PCP Crosman has offered so they have a learning curve to overcome. It is also about 1/2 the price of any non-Chinese PCP offered so I'm sure they made a lot of concessions to meet the price point.
Some of the issues with assembly and cleaning are hopefully just startup "burps" that happen with many new products. That said it does seem the quality inspection group must be under the gun to resolve a lot of the poor cleaning assembly items.
A Crosman employee (possibly more than one) have posted that a new and more expensive PCP is under development and they hope to offer soon (My guess before XMAS?).
The Discovery also offers a few nice features (a lower fill pressure) much easier for the hand pumpers! and dual fuel (CO2) option that only a few others offer.
I'm guessing it will also appear in the Crosman "mod shop" with all kinds of nifty options in the near future.

niebler,

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll move on with my thoughts about this air rifle, at least until the new version shows up. It does have some nice features. ;)

I'm certainly glad I inquired; all the response has been very helpful. No doubt saved some "flustration" and money.

Thanks again,

Jinks.

Glad to help

I'm happy to help.

I guess I could add a little info here on low cost options for starting in benchrest air rifle. I will give a few options for each class that I think would be worthwhile as a starting gun and a few more that are not real expensive but good options.

Looking for used check out http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/79574 or http://www.airguns.net/classifieds/classifieds.html or http://gunbroker.com/

Good dealers are http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/

Most repair and offer used guns a few offer reviews and blogs on airgun info.

There are many tuners and you will find that you can get guns customized as well or better than rimfire/centerfire.

There are lower cost guns than all I mentioned above but most would require some tuning that would negate any savings.

All the ones I mentioned would be easy to resell if (or should I say when hehe) you want to upgrade.

All you guys that have a few thousand dollar to throw around probably don't need any help spending it.

niebler,

There sure is a bit of lookin' here. I'll be a month going all over all this stuff. One thing though, I like the looks of that Air Arms S400. But the "Beny" has that "pump and Low Press" feature that keeps calling.

Thanks again.

Sorry about the volume hehe

I will try and make smaller reading assignments in the future hehe. The AA S400 is a nice gun I have the MPR-FT version myself. Just be aware it is a little loud so not backyard friendly if you have neighbors that are close and anti noise hehe.

Nothing says you can't buy them both.
