Proper Neck Size for Ruger 6mm PPC

Hello All!

I have a Ruger M77 Mark II target chambered in 6ppc for factory. I can't figure out how much to size the necks down. I have a Redding die set coming but I don't know which bushing sizes to order. I don't know the neck diameter in the chamber (maybe I should have the rifle chamber-cast), but the person I bought it from gave me some ammo, the ammo feeds and fires, and the neck dia of that ammo is about 0.263". Does that mean I should buy bushings in sizes 0.262, 0.261, and 0.260? I'm not sure.:confused:

Steve...the ND of the chamber doesnt determine the bushing size...the loaded round neck dia is what counts...use a bushing .003" smaller than this dim.....of course the ND of the chamber determins the correct ND of the loaded round...ahhahah....you know!!!.....check and measure everything....the fired round will give an approxx size .001 smaller than actual ND...Roger

The neck diameter of the Rugers is wildly oversized. Roger is right, measure a loaded round and get bushings .003 and .002 smaller but don't worry about Roger's statement .....of course the ND of the chamber determins the correct ND of the loaded round... because while Rog is completely RIGHT, it doesn't apply to your factory rifle with it's oversized neck. I've owned all of the Ruger 6PPC USA's and you won't have to worry about nd of the chamber :)

Except that they'll split necks over time.

I took pics of the Sako last night and could get them uploaded and sent if you're still in the market.

For the cases you have .260 or .261 would probably be in order, maybe even .259. New brass might be better off cut larger, check the neck size after you fire the brass you have.

OK here is some data. These #'s are averages

Neck dia of loaded unfired round .263
Neck diameter of the shells that were dired 0.266
Assuming this data is obtained correctly, and the person who owned the rifle before me did the reloads properly (he just full length sized the brass, he didn't neck size. He used the wilson seating die meant to go into an arbor press) the neck diameter in the chamber is about 0.267 and the bushings I should get are 0.262, 0.261 and 0.260

Also the OAL range is 2.18 - 2.22
The case length range is 1.48 - 1.5
