Problem with my scope?

I finally had a chance to mount my new scope- a Leupold Vari-X III 6.5x20 AO EFR on my Anschutz Match 64.
I had ordered some Anschutz rings from Champion Shooter's Supply and installed them on my rifle's rail.
I went to the range today and found that the point of impact was very low- about 8 inches. I started dialing up and found that I ran out of vertical adjustment. It hit the stop and I am still about 4 inches low.

Is there a front and rear ring in this set? I got the scope used and the previous owner had a lot of vertical adjustment left so I am thinking it must be something I did.

Help?

Jim

G'day mate, blow me down, I've got exacally the same problem ay, my rifle shoots a treat (64MPR) but I ran out of elevation beyond 50m. I put a shim in my rear scope ring on the bottom and it works a treat I think from memory my shim measured 0.019" (it was the cardboard of the Tally Ho papers - x2). I have on order some burris signature rings and the shim inserts. Check them out. I've been meaning to email Anschutz and ask them why......... ? Hope this helps.

I agree that you need to look at the Burris rings with the inserts!
Leupold makes some great scopes BUT internal adjustment range isn't one of their higher qualities!:(

Rings

First thing I would do is reverse the rings - front to rear and rear to front. It is amazing why this works but it does sometimes.

If no joy here, I would try to get some BKL rings as they have worked great ALWAYS for me.

The following assumes you are shooting at 100 yards or less with standard ammo.
I know this might sound stupid but is there any chance your scope is touching the barrel?
Next I would rotate the Scope 180 deg in the rings and see what happens? (This checks for a Scope problem)
If none of the above work then swap rings back to front as mentioned above. (This checks for mismatched rings.)
My guess is that one of these tests have to work because the Dovetails cut into the Anschutz action are usually fairly true.

I just reread your post were you said you mounted your scope on the rifles rail? Did you mean the 11mm dovetail on the receiver or is there a rail mounted to the receiver? Now a Rail could also be your problem.

I was shooting at 25 yards.
I did just recently get this rifle. When I first shot it I used the olympic style Anschutz aperture sights- it was dead on.
I bought the scope used, but it looks new. there are no marks anywhere on it.
When I first fired it I left the scope where it was to see how far off the poi was. It was a little left but very low. I just started adjusting to raise the poi and ran out of adjustment.
I will be pulling the rings and try swapping them around. I will measure them before mounting to see if there is a difference.
The scope doesn't almost touch the barrel. There is 1/4" to 1/2" between the scope bell and the barrel.
The scope is mounted to the 11mm rails on the rifle- no mount. These are Anschutz tip-off rings made for the rail.

Jim, if you bring it to my shop I can probably help you. James

James I may do that. I pulled the rings and measured them. Both are the same height. If I find that I have the same problem after re-installing them I will get in touch with you. Thanks.

Jim

Try the shim idea mate, it worked for me, the only thing I can think of is the dovetails are not true (front and back) or the barrel is not true to the action, Ive had 2 off these rifles and they have both been the same. Its stumped me, and the people that I shoot with and the blokes at my rifle shop. The funny thing is, they both shot beautifully.

I had the same with my Annie 1913,but with a swarovski scope and eaw rings. It was just for 50m but I was out of elevation beyond.
I shimmed with 3 slices of foto negative (3/10th mm) and I am in the middle of the range at 50m.I can add 8moa to shoot at 100m and still have about a turn left.Works fine.

If I'm not within an inch of mechanical zero, either wind or elv @ 50yds, I start looking elsewhere. Thanks, Douglas

Right I'm going to send them an email hey. I heard a rumour that the Anschutz 64 actions are assembled in China.......... Has anybody heard this rumour before ??? It would explain alot ay.

Listen To Douglas

Douglas is telling you the right way a scope should be mounted on a benchrest rifle.

James, what kind of shop do you have? do you have the tools to check out and find what's wrong?

Jim

I am about to pull the knobs and see if there is any more vertical adjustment or if it's topped out.

I hate to shim the scope. That just seems like a good way to stress the tube. I doubt it would bend, but it still wouldn't be right.

Do Anschutz rails need rings that have different heights?

Jim

Jim, call me tomorrow, you can ruin your scope by shimming it. 817-735-9883

Just wandering if you seen David Keen lately. If so tell him David Kenimer says hello for me . Thanks. By the way if your scope is not somewhat centered up your loosing some of the best optics. The closer to the center is where the best optics of a scope are. Shimmimg is the quickest fix.David K
