problem tightening savage bolt assembly screw

Hi guys,

A while back I dismantled my savage bolt to give it a clean and now no matter how hard I think i'm tightening the bolt screw, it always seems to work loose.

To be honest i'm worried about breaking it so i'm reluctant to put too much force into it but it's really annoying and I definitely want resolved.

What can I do to stop it coming loose? Is there a level of torque that I should be applying?

When tightening while it's in the action it worries me that i'm torquing against the bolt head and it's pin and I don't want to damage either.
Torquing against the bolt handle seems imprecise because the handle is poorly indexed and I don't want to mess up the timing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

David

Dave,
I had the same problem with mine. Take the bolt out of the receiver and tighten the bolt screw with an allen firmly by placing on workbench and using the bolt as the 'hold back'. Just don't get crazy with the torque, use basic common sense. Place a matchmark on the bolt screw head and the area it mates with. If the matchmarks change after shooting dissasemble the bolt, degrease the threaded i.d. of the bolt and the screw and use blue Lock Tite. That should be enough to keep things tight.

You can't over tighten it, I have never had one come loose and I use moly grease on the threads. Place it on the bench as suggested and give it a good tightening.

Thanks guys.

I didn't think of lube on the threads I expect that there is a bit there so I'll clean that up and give it another go.

and if that fails i'll give the blue loctite a go.
