possible lost or stolen bench gun

My brother called me this afternoon to ask if anyone has had a bench gun stolen a year or more ago. While doing some electrical work for a lady in Dallas, she showed him a rifle that had been in her garage for about a year and just wanted to get it out of the garage. From what I understand, her son was/is heavy into drugs. My brother knows enough about the guns we shoot to recognize one and brought it home with him. The rifle has a BAT action, no markings on the barrel but it is a 6mm bore according to him. It has rings and bases but no scope. I haven't seen the gun but he did tell me what color the stock is and the serial # on the action, however, since this post can be seen all over the internet, I won't give that information out here. I know this is very limited info, but I can be contacted by pm here or at rddawson@door.net for more information.

Bat Machine , who manufactured the action

BAT Machine Co., Inc. | 11550 N. Bruss Rd. | Rathdrum, ID | 83858 CALL US TODAY: (208) 687-0341

Should be able to provide the information on who purchased the action, which should be a big clue.

Plan on contacting them tomorrow with the serial # and see if they have a record of who is was sold to.

Just keep us up to tune on this, I understand the need for privacy, but we are all against theft of bench guns, theft of anything for that matter, and if this community can help. !!!!!!

Brother sent a picture of it to me. There is a name----- Reathdrum JD on the action. Does that ring a bell? It is also in an edge stock.

that's Rathdrum, ID, BAT's manufacturing location.

Thanks Aaron. There is also the number 38 on it. I'll call BAT this morning and find out if there is a record of it. This whole thing sent up a red flag. Drugs and a kid with a bench gun in his mothers garage all this time.

Rifle is stolen

My brother took it to the Amarillo police department early this morning and just called and said it came back as stolen. They have it and will be contacting the person who made the report. Thanks for all your help guys.

R.G., it was to late yesterday as the detective who handles these things had left for the day. My brother was waiting for him this morning. The rifle was reported stolen in 2004. I'm glad John was suspicious and contacted me about it so I could at least post this here last night. I'll pat him on the back next time I see him. I hope everyone can understand why I didn't give all the identification of that rifle (stock color, action configuration, etc.) on an open forum.

Big mistake? I'm not going to take a stolen rifle home with me. The right thing to do is let the police handle it now and get the man's property back to him. Who knows, he may get a chance to hang somebodies a$$ to boot. Oh, by the way, how would you have handled it different?

This practice is SOP,or it was before I retired. Nothing unusual. Unclaimed,stolen/recovered firearms are destroyed after a period of time.

I had a bunch '4' Browning citori's stolen from my folks garage back in 03. Once the police found out I had insurance, they stopped looking! Never found them!! Nothing much worse than an freakin thief!! Lee

I had a rifle stolen from me. I knew the guy that had it. ATF in KC told me to sue the guy. Dodge City PD took the case and arrested the guy. He had another guys weapon also. The Dodge City PD took several photos of the rifle and shipped it to me. The fellow will be sentenced on Thursday. Dodge City PD did a great job and I don't think that they could have handled it differently
Ray, I think that you and your brother did a great job. I know you and know you would do the correct thing.
It would be nice if it happened to be Glenn Chism's long lost rifle.

Thanks Butch. Glen was the first one that came to mind. I was hoping it was his. As an update, there were two rifles stolen at the same time, both BATs with same stock. The owner at least gets one of them back and the police now have names and a place to start tracking backward. From what I hear, that is what they are doing now. Maybe they'll catch the s.o.b. and find the other one.
