Possible 1,000 yd. shooter died??????

I was just wondering if anyone knows.... We used to have a very good shooter up at Hawk's Ridge a few years back who most everyone knew as "Harley" (cause he was a Harley rider) "I think?", his real name was David Blaylock???? Anyway, we had known that he had some form of cancer. He began not showing up very much and I know he was not there at all last year. I read in the Hickory or Charlotte paper last week that a guy with that name age 50 from the general area where David came from, died. Just curious if anyone who knew him could verify? Maybe I have the wrong guy? I wrote to Bill Shehane but have not heard anything back. He was a super nice guy.

Cancer and shooters?

I'm in Hickory, and shoot at Bullseye. I don't know of that name shooting there. Ditto with Hickory, Morganton and Gastonia Skeet Ranges. Catawba County Wildlife Club could have been his hangout. They have a nice 300 yard range there.......I'll ask around. You should email hg shelton. He would be or more help than I was.

I can clarify that Glenn Layden was a "Harley" man. He died 2 years ago from cancer. He was an avid skeet shooter, and has just got into Defensive Handgun Shooting and Bought his first Bench rest rifle, but was only able to shoot it a couple of times. I would give up my years left if I had lead him to IR5050 and ARA before he passed. It would have been much easier on his frail body. He loved the 22-250 he bought, but even that was too much recoil.
When they did the throat surgery, it destroyed his neck muscles.

It seems too many shooters die of cancer at too young an age. His came from smoking, but I wonder if the lead combined with the solvents we use has anything to do with that.

My physical is next month. I'm going to ask the Dr if all those rounds of lead I have loaded over 30 years could have contributed to some unknown liver ailment I had. They ran ever possible test, even sent a biopsy to the mayo clinic, and no one has a clue.

I can see him with his ponytail but can only remember calling him Harley Dave. He was a saleman at the Harley dealer in Charlotte. If I hear of anything I'll let you know.

Rich,
"Harley" David Bowles from Cornelius, NC is who you are referring to. Cornelius was his mailing address in 2004 from the old mailing lists that I have archived.

His last match that I show him firing at Hawks Ridge was 8/21/04 which was the day we held the 2 matches in one day and the second was the night match. David had won his LG relay that day for group. He fired a 3.610" screamer with a 46 score. Then he won the LG Group shootoff with a 3.611" and a perfect 50 to boot. Imagine firing 2 screamer groups in one day and they measure almost to the exact thousands of an inch.

David Bowles is the second man in from the right in the attached picture of local convicts... shooters. I knew he was battling cancer at that time. What a character to shoot the breeze with.

"Harley" Dave is doing fine

Rich,
Bill Shehane just called me at work and he talks to Harley Dave about every week. David took his last chemo treatment about a year ago and is doing fine. Right after his last chemo treatment, Harley Dave had his 24" ponytail cutoff and donated to the organization that makes wigs for cancer patients who loose their hair. He has been taking care of his mother who is 83yrs old I believe Bill said. So whoever you read about in the paper wasn't our Harley Dave.

Bill tried to respond to your email asking about Dave's status, but it got kicked back for some reason and he can't get signed into BR Central to make posts now either. So he got your message but he can't send it back. I don't think I have your current address myself to send to Bill. Maybe try sending Bill another message and see if he can't just reply to that one or something or another. Or give him a holler at the shop. Bill's boss was manning the phones when I called and she passed the phone right over to Bill. :)

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that David Bowles is doing good and his early demise was a source of humor when he was told about this post. Which is a good thing this day and age. I'm sure David got a good chuckle out of this one if I know his sense of humor.

Yup! My fault (CRS) Harley Dave Boyles. I called Shehane yesterday. We did however have a shooter named Gary BLAYLOCK so maybe thats where the confusion came in. Anyway, "Harley Dave....Glad your still with us and doing well according to Bill!"

I Ain't Dead Yet..... I Think????

Folks this is "Harley Dave Bowles" coming at ya from the great beyond. Beyond,
Huntersville a bit north to Lake Norman (Cornelius,NC)!!!

Bill Shehane called me up to give me my bad news of my demise. I'll have to tell
ya, it nearly KILLED me... I'm too young, too many triggers to pull, miles to ride.
I never got a chance to get ugly:cool: I will have to admit it was a hard pill to
swallow. I haven't told any of my next of kin yet, i'm still trying to take it
all in. What will they say over me, good Lord, what will they sing??? I never had
time to plan?!?! Geesh... I knew this would happen. It never fails. Everytime I
plan something a wrench gets thrown in the monkey works. Does anybody out
there understand how frustrating this is??? Two years after finishing Chemo and
BAM!!! Y'er outta here. There' only a few people that know so please keep this
under your collective hats till I get time to get a handle on things. I have a few markers to call in, maybe if I can get word to St. Peter he may put this
off to later. Or who knows I might just wakeup and find out this has all been
a dream.:D That always happens when I dream about a beautiful woman in
my arms, I wake up and crap!!! Dreamin' again.

Folks, for real, it's good to know people remember one another and good times
we've had. What a great bunch of shooters @ HAWKS RIDGE, I sure miss all
of ya'll. When things smooth out I hope to be back. Money always gets in the
way, as does not enough time. Till then have a great day and GOD bless.
Everything is good and the MAN upstairs has sure looked out for me.

Spencer2928,

Well I don't know exactly what info that you need. I think the best way is
that we talk about it over the phone, if you care to. It's a real sharp rig and
it has nothing but the best that money could buy. Leonard Baity preforms
only the BEST work you ever expect to get anywhere. How's this, he re-chambered the "Heavy" gun with fired brass from my "LIGHT" gun to the
point that I use my full length neck die to re-size both guns with absolutely no noticeable difference while on the fireing line in reguards to bolt closeing
between either gun. That is remarkable;) So if you want to talk about it
in detail (I want to be sure to address your conserns) give me a call. All
hands are on top of the table. I purchased the gun from Bill Shehane as a
6/.284 which kicked serious butt, and, word got out that i rechambered it
in 6.5 a new shooter got that 6mm barrel to build his "Heavy" gun. Let's talk
over the phone if you are interested, I think would be better. Just go to the
classified and my contact info is there. Till then "keep'um tight".:)
