For the rimfire shooters, the named theory is very familiar. This thread, http://forums.delphiforums.com/Smallbore/messages/?msg=421.1

While rimfire ammo and pellets are different, there is information that might be applicable to both.

There seems to be some thought that as group sizes improve, the rimfire bullet maintains a greater percentage of it's velocity when it arrives at the target. This is postulated to be due to improved yaw characteristics at launch.

This certainly opens up a number of testing possibilities for air rifle shooters, especially at ranges longer than 25 meters.
