Placment Of Front Rest

I am a beginner at this game and need some advise. I know there are about a zillion years of experience here and you share it freely.

My question: Is there a generally accepted placement of the front rest in relation the the balance point of the rifle? Attatched is a photo of the rifle I will be shooting with a pointer showing the balance point if that will help you to answer.

(Ignore the thingie attatched to the butt stock.)

Most BR style front rest will have a stop built in, just slide the rifle forward until it hits the stop. The stop will ensure that your rifle is returned to battery each time and in the same forward position.

Yes, I have a rest with the stop but I had forgotten about the front stop. I will also be using the rifle for F/TR and installing a bi-pod in the accessory rail.

Just curious I guess if the rest were positioned further back would affect anything like recoil or upward movment of the rifle.

Just Mike,

I couldn't ignore the thingy attached to the buttstock, or the two toes in the picture.......but I finally figgered out what it was! :D

It's a contoured shelf for hanging the gun on the wall, right?

My question is, how did you manage to stick to the wall while you shot the pic? Velcro?

LOL

You are right on both counts. How did you figure it was a trick picture?

P.S. there was also some velcro to hold the rifle on the wall.

Just Mike,

It's common to set the balance point of the rifle right at, to an inch in front of the front of the receiver ring. Or, right at the recoil lug (Rem style) My belief is that an inch BACK from the recoil lug is safer than an inch FORWARD. I've had more trouble with rifles "wagging their tail" than from being light in the front. (Understand that this is only my personal feeling based on limited observation.)

In the case that the gun balances right on the recoil lug it's accepted practice to set your front rest an inch or 3 back from the tip of the forend. If you start creeping your front resting position backward down the stock then the butt gets squirrely.

That said, your balance point looks to be already a little too far forward......? ........ like three inches too far forward....... My guess is that as you move your rest back toward the action face you'll see more and more twist. My suggestion is to ADD some weight to the butt until it balances nearer the rec ring and to keep the front rest clear out on the end. You seem to have a combination of SHORT forend, LONG barrel and a light butt.........my guess is that you'll have to hold this badboy down on the rear to get it to shoot. Maybe off-hand will grip the pistol grip?? Or just keep some down pressure with your trigger hand and cheek weld?

I doubt that it'll free recoil well.

Thanks for that advise. It is just the type I was looking for. It will give me, a newbie, some ideas where to start and some things to try. Thanks again.
