If you missed out on this one you surely did miss one heck of a nice day for being at the range. The temps were actually a bit on the cool side to start with as they were only in the upper 50’s while setting up, and I don’t think they ever left the 60’s throughout the match, but we were facing a very switchy wind, enough so to rock the trees all match long. The funny thing was, when we (and I mean everyone) were on our way to the range it seemed like the day was going to be at least calm to start with as down in the flat-lands there was no evidence of what was happening up on the mountain; the ponds were all mirror-like, and the leaves all hung limp. And even later on when the Airgunners arrived they couldn’t help but comment on how calm things still were down below, but how quickly things had changed the closer they got to the range. Yup, the winners definitely earned their victories today!
We only had 6 shooters come out for the IR 50/50 portion of the match with results to follow:
SPORTER CLASS
1.) AL HADFIELD 243-9x
2.) Michael Gallant 242-8x
3.) Penny Hadfield 241-5x
4.) Dave Shattuck 232-7x
5.) Barry Wood 213-1x
10.5# CLASS
1.) AL HADFIELD 248-14x
2.) Penny Hadfield 246-13x
3.) Dave Shattuck 246-11x
4.) Michael Gallant 243-4x
5.) Doug Shea 239-5x
6.) Barry Wood 213-1x
13.5# CLASS
1.) PENNY HADFIELD 248-11x
2.) Al Hadfield 246-9x
3.) Doug Shea 246-8x
4.) Michael Gallant 245-10x
5.) Dave Shattuck 243-11x
6.) Barry Wood 215-0x
As you can see by the results our X-count’s were way lower than usual across the board due to that switchy aforementioned wind.
By the time we had everything cleaned up and reorganized for the AGBR portion of the match two more shooters had come in, but as usual there were 4 of our rimfire people going home, meaning only 4 would remain for the Airguns.
When Dan Brown arrived one of the first topics of conversation was just how unbelievably windy it was at the range when compared to down in the flat-lands, and how quickly things had changed the closer they got to the Club. Dan had brought along a new shooter, Daniel Finney, and let him use his 26 year old Sharp Ace which Daniel did quite well with and showed great promise for the future. Dan on the other hand had his new FX Independence literally fall apart on him …again… right in the middle of the second target and now has to have some warranty work done on it as I think he said something about a threaded portion on the hand pump snapping off.
What follows is only my opinion, but is being voiced in hopes of warning anyone who is currently considering buying one of these guns:
I hope FX will review their quality control issues very soon as they seemed to have undersized or cut corners in several areas when it comes to the quality of materials being used, but still charge a premium price for their product as the Independence lists for $1695, while its PCP twin, the FX Royal 400 sells for between $1395 in a Synthetic Stock and $1595 in Walnut. Even though I have been extremely impressed with the out-of-the-box accuracy of both of these FX’s, before considering making a purchase I for one would wait until FX gets their act together before considering dropping anywhere near that much money on a gun that is simply building a reputation for falling apart due to its poor quality/design.
