Ah yes, New England! Ya gotta love it! Two weeks ago it was 60° with lots of sun and gentle breezes, and then today we get 2 inches of snow and darn near froze our butts off.
The forecasters had been saying rain, wind and cold. We got the cold, that’s for sure as were glad to still have the Shootin’ Shack with its woodstove in place. And the wind: we saw enough of that too, but mainly through the first 3 targets before it let off a bit. As for the rain, we saw lots of that down on the flatlands while making our way to and from the match, but as the road climbed up the mountain things started to quickly change over from rain, to sleet, to a rainy/sleety/snowy mix, and finally ended up being a full-fledged, outright snowstorm.
When we arrived, the ground was bare. By mid-match everything was covered in white. By the end of the match there was a good ±2 inches of snow all over everything. And because of the rate of snowfall during the match, at times it made it hard to even see your targets, let alone to have any idea where your pellets were landing.
Now, as for that age-old debate on if a raindrop hits your pellet while in-flight, does it have much of an impact? I’m pretty sure it must, but after today, I’m down right positive bringing hit by a slush ball while in-flight will send your pellets sailing! And it can either cause a substantial POI drop, or in one particular case, will send it off into the already shot target straight above the one you’re aiming for. Can’t compensate for that! No way!!!!
There were only 3 of us here today. I guess the rest were smart enough to stay home and in out of the rain. Ah, but they don’t have any idea of what they missed! So, how did the 3 of us do you ask? Could have been better!
