We had one heck of a fine day for shooting on Saturday, a bit on the breezy side, but a beautiful day overall

Air Gun Bench Rest

I had a strange experience. After our last match I had realized that my 19 year old Leupold 36X Scope on my Theoben was long overdue for a good going through. Not knowing just how quickly Leupold would be about getting the work done I had mounted a Weaver T6 in its place. I mean, who would have ever guessed that in the heart of the shooting season Leupold would turn it around door-to-door in 15 days?
When it came back there were just 3 days before our next match. As much as I wanted to remount it, I just didn't have enough time, and since I am fully familiar with shooting 6X scopes as I've been doing so on my Sporter Class rimfire guns for years, I decided to leave the 6X in place. During the match on the first target I didn't feel I was doing all that badly, but couldn’t tell for sure and figured I was probably running in the high 230's to low 240’s. Boy, was I ever surprised to find out I had just posted a 247-4X, which was my second best outdoor target to date. I decided right then and there that the 6X is staying on at least until we move back indoors come Fall.
Over the coarse of the next to targets I started noticing how, due to the lower magnification, I could watch each and every shot climb the vertical crosshair straight from the bottom of the scope to the POA, and man, was it ever neat whenever they landed right behind the dot for an X or 10! I have always said that 36X is just too much magnification at 25Y, at least for me, and now I’m convinced of it. Even though my second and third targets were not quite as impressive, I attribute a lot of that to the fact of my not feeling well due to having an infected insect bite of some sort on my back.

It was only Doug, Dan and I for the match, and each of us took a turn at winning a Class with Dan shooting his personal best 3-Gun Agg. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Dan is running an FX Independent, which is a pumper, so he had to go through a full Cardo-workout while proving to us once again that He is definitely “the Man”. Can you imagine: take the shot, lift the gun, pump it 3 times, settle it back down into the bags, load it, take aim, then repeat this for at least another 25 shots all in the coarse of 20 minutes. I don’t think so!

And, the results there were:

UL-1
1. Dave Shattuck 247-4X
2. Dan Brown 245-1X
3. Doug Shea 244-0X

UL-2
1. Dan Brown 241-3X
2. Doug Shea 241-0X
3. Dave Shattuck 239-2X

UL-3

2. Dave Shattuck 244-4X

3-Gun Agg.

There were 7 of us at the match. Al Hadfield kicked things off nicely by taking the Sporter Class with a 246-11X, then Penny Hadfield, not to be outdone, followed up with a win in the 10.5# Class shooting a 247-12X. But, it was Michael Gallant who broke their momentum by winning the 13.5# Class and shooting the high target for the day as he posted a 248-12X. Nice shooting guys! And the rest of us cheered our leaders on.

The results were:

SPORTER CLASS
1. Al Hadield 246-11X
2. Penny Hadfield 241-8X
3. Dave Shattuck 241-3X
4. Michael Gallant 239-8X
5. Barry Wood 189-3X
Doug Shea and Roger Gagnon were DNQ's

10.5# CLASS
1. Penney Hadfield 247-12X
2. Doug Shea 246-12X
3. Al Hadfield 244-12X
4. Michael Gallant 240-8X
5. Dave Shattuck 236-5X
6. Roger Gagnon 234-6X
7. Barry Wood 213-3X

13.5# CLASS
1. Michael Gallant 248-12X
2. Al Hadfield 246-11X
3. Doug Shea 245-11X FM5
4. Penny Hadfield 245-11X FM4
5. Dave Shattuck 245-7X
6. Roger Gagnon 237-5X
7. Barry Wood 218-5X

Interesting how in the 13.5# Class 2, 3, and 4 all shot 11X's, and 3, 4 and 5 all shot 245's.

If all goes well, our next Pinnacle Mountain match will be on July 31st. Hope to see some of you there.

Nice shooting! I now use a 24X, becuase it can JUST make it on airguns for bench at the 25 and fifty yd distances. The other scopes i have are more versatile, so they get moved around lot from gn to gun. I like a lower power yet, and If I had a good one I wold use a 16X. We shoot at 50yds ... if I shot at 25, I would feel well equipped with a 10X.

BTW, are you guys still mostly shooting .22 cal?
