seems to be the most popular, but what's wrong with a V block?

PPP MMM,
I think for competition guns it has more to do with making weight per the rules that are being shot under, more than whether pillars are better or worse than a V block setup.

over on 6mmbr under technical articals Richard Franklin offers a dvd on stress free pillar bedding with devcon 10110, also he uses leftover pieces from barrels to make pillars. The v-blocks only make a very small contact area with the action, however if you bed the action that has a v-block you will get more contact area and less chances of slippage under recoil.
at least that's how it was explained to me.
if you do have a v-block stock, make small dimples in the aluminum with a drill bit that doesn't actually make contact with the action and rough up the area for bedding material to adhere to, but make sure you do not rough up or dimple the part that actually makes contact with the action.

Pillars vs. "V" blocks

I have looked at a number of factory (HS Precision) stocks with the molded in V blocks both in Remingtons and Savages. In ALL cases the V blocks did not contact the action their full length and the actions just were held in place with the action screws rather than the bedding and without the screws jsut "wallowed" back and forth. As stated above, dimple the V blocks and skin bed the actions and everything is good to go.

As to pillar bedding, I thing that with this and bedding, you about as good as with the V blocks if the stocks are wook, and jsut as good or better if the stocks are McMillan. With foam cores stocks - ??????????????? unless McMillan.
