Pierced Case Occurance

A number of years back I experienced a pierced case shooting a Turbo and Lapua. This only happened one time in some 25,000 rounds that I put through that rifle, but it did get my attention as stuff hit me about the glasses and cheek...no harm because of my glasses. Has this ever happened to ya'll ? There is a thread on another board where the topic of discussion is shooting glasses and the requirement that some clubs have that mandate their use. One guy is saying that rimfires pose no eye injury threat so glasses shouldn't be required when shooting 22s. His rationale is that he has never seen a rimfire shooter with an eye patch ! I have a tight chambered low wall that I would never shoot without eye protection as the block cams the round into the chamber ! I've never had a problem with it, but the potential is there. Let me know your personal experiences so that I can inform PP (Potential Popeye) how stupid his logic is. Thanks, Ken

eyes and ears

IMHO any club that doesn't have a required eye protection and hearing protection by any person on the range when there is live fire is just asking for a law suit.
And yes I've had a Lapua case rupture on me just like you are talking about. I think it was from an odd lot number of lapua ammo because everyone was talking about.
One club in Texas won't allow pets on the range unless they have eye and ear protection.

Hi, Ken lomg time no see. My old Winchester 52B that I shot at Caldwell Co. did the pop thing three times with lapua midis L it was I thing in the old 44 something lot #. I blamed it on caring it around for a long time because it didn't shoot that good. Come up and shoot with us some time be good to see you. Gerald

Quite common with the old gold box Lapua. I have several lots that split the rim. Not often but frequent enough that I don't shoot it in big matches and never without glasses. Stuff will come back and hit you in the face. Even had the complete rear of the brass come off a couple times. Got to hook the brass tube out of the chamber with needle nose pliers, pick your extractor up off the bench and put things back together. Gets your attention.Your buddy can shoot without galsses if he wants, his eyes, he does have two right? One is obviously a spare.

Ken, several years ago Lapua had some quality problems with the brass and recalled several lots of Midas and Multimatch. Lot's of it didn't get returned because it shot so well. A few years later several cases of the good Lapua were "found" in a warehouse by Caltron-Pettibon and sold. I got a couple of cases of the Multimatch from that. It shot really well in my rifles but once every couple of boxes I'd get a split rim. i have always thought that "found" ammo was what was left of the stuff Lapua recalled. I still have a couple boxes of it but the splits got more frequent over the years and I'm afraid to shoot it any more.
My club requires eye and ear protection on every range and even for spectators on the pistol ranges.

I have a #3 Ballard Gallery rifle that will pierce a case every so often. I can only tell by looking at the brass and finding smoke and a hole on the rim where it has been struck. Usuall Wolf ammo, but that's because that is what I use in that rifle. I don't know if it does it with other flavors.

One can never go wrong wearing eye protection. I don't always follow that dictum, but I damn sure should.

We had a couple of lapua cases blow at one of our regionals last year. A friend took one back to his lab and split the case to photo it under a powerful microscope. The inner outside edge of the case where the primer would rest was weakened by some type of reaction with the brass in several spots.

Blown cases

Thanks for all the replies ! I remember well the lot of Lapus Midas L ...it was 3644. This was one of those magic lots that Mr. Bill calls a killer lot. It shot better than anything else did in about every rifle we shot it in. Dave, I didn't know about any recall, however I wouldn't have turned it in for all the tea in China. Fred, I'm still alive and kicking and competing in BPCR events!

Ken, Most folks that had the good Lapua that was recalled didn't turn it in. I know I didn't turn in the stuff I was shooting. This was back when Art Cook was handling the Lapua Rimfire ammo for Kaltron-Pettibon. As I remember I returned a few cases that had not been opened and they were replaced.

pierced cases

A couple of years ago I had a Lapua case rupture on me. I don't remember the lot number, but I do remember smoke coming out of the action. I was wearing glasses at the time so I had no problems with that. Our club requires ear and eye protection. Slim
