Pellet Stabilization

"It could be a stabilization issue,"

I have a huge amount of respect for Todd Banks but too many more quotes like the one above and nights without sleep might change that.

The quote is regarding why a barrel/pellet combination might shoot very well indoors but could be a loser outdoors.

Conversations with friends that have PhD after their names and consult to NASA have been interesting. Terms like, wobble, increased time in flight and surface area exposure have come up. Some of this would explain why one lot of pellets actually does do better than another lot of the same pellet. The occasional "flyer" might have it's roots right here.

Harmonics, air density and launch angle were discussed as possible causes. I was told that high speed photography and proper lighting might lead to some answers and possibly, more questions. I am ready to re=enter school, again, and prepare a thesis, if Bill Gates will finance the project.

Or, maybe we just need better pellets.

Cris do not know if you visit the yellow forum, But a lot of what you have suggested has been looked into, None of it on a NASA level but interesting just the same. due a search on long range that will get a lot, Yarrah has done a bunch of videos of pellets in flight, going to have to due some digging over there as there is a lot of activity so threads get buried.

Blades,

I am aware of Harry who posts on the other forum. While his testing is precise and detailed, it typically involves ranges that I have no interest in. More importantly, his experience in benchrest is rather limited. His posts are some of the few I do read over there. Maybe, an invite to join us here will allow everyone to learn something new.

Question,
If you are shooting a pellet indoors what air is effecting it, the air that it is pushing out of the way to get to the target?
Now if you are shooting outdoors what air is effecting it, besides the air it is pushing out of the way, is it the wind blowing from a certain direction, what ever that maybe.
Now if there is a slight wobble in the pellet, caused by the pellet or the barrel, where is it going to show up more, indoors OR out?
Pete
