PCP Usage Question

crb

Ray Brooks
I have a Daystate CRX. Probably get 30 to 50 consistent shots from a 3K psi charge. Not quite enough to do a match [ especially with the winds that are forecast for tomorrow]. I thought about topping up the cyl right after shooting the 12th or 13th bull or maybe at the end of the third row, ie about 1/2 way through the target.

What is the protocol for doing this ? Is it appropriate to do it at the bench? Seems that might be a distraction to the other competitors.

What is the sop for handling this situation ?

My CO2 match class rifle should get 200 + shots per cyl so it won't be a problem.

Thanks
Ray

Ray,
Durning our matches some people put the tank on the table close to the bench they are shooting, some on the bench. Others take the gun to the car or truck to fill. My springer and match gun I have to stand up to cock and load every shot. The Co2 pistols have to empty the cartrage before changing. So do not worry about topping off your tank durning a match.

Ray,

If you're getting 30 to 50 shots before needing a refill you should be fine for a full card as you don't have to worry about "keeping the barrel warm" when shooting airguns. But, if you find that you are shooting "off to the side" a lot, and feel that you may need to refill while the clock is running, as Paul said, that should be no problem as there's a lot more going on around the bench area than just loading and shooting as with rimfire shooting.

So, bring your tank to the bench with you until you figure out what you'll need, then you'll at least have piece-of-mind during the shoot.

Now, take a deep breathe, and relax.

Good luck!

At Blackbelt

Most of us set our tank next to the bench and shoot our sighter targets until we are ready to go for record. Then refill our rifle and shoot one more sighter target to make sure everything is still working correctly and then go to the record targets.

I personally shoot two rows of record targets and sighters as necessary. If I'm shooting all 10's and I have not seen anything crazy I continue on and shoot the third row.

Most of the time after that 3rd row , I recharge my rifle, reville in the moment, especially if I still have all 10's and go to the sighter for about 5 shots.

I then move to the record and shoot the last 2 rows.

I use to try to shoot the whole target without refilling and have done so many times, especially when practicing but have found out from shooting a few hundred targets that I have a better x count when I stop and refill my rifle

Ray,

I would suggest being polite and refilling at a back table instead of right on the firing line. I know that is how we do it here in San Diego. No one had filled up at the line unless it was between targets, during the actual target, the shooters get up and use a back table away from the other shooters.

Now that I think about it the benches at Gold City are pretty close together so filling at a back bench will work best. I was just mainly wanting to know if refilling during the match is normal.

My charging hose is 3 feet long so that does allow for more options.

Refilling Precharged or co2 guns during the stage

I'm not too seasoned regarding BR etiquette, but have fired Silhouette, 10M, and Field Target events (where similar guns are used) for decades.

In general, refilling should never be done on the firing line during an event, and, in most cases, tanks are not even allowed on the line at any shooting ranges I've attended. This is mostly for safety reasons, but the sound and commotion of refilling IS a distraction during a relay.

That said, at my matches on my ranch, we DO sometimes top up on the benches, but ONLY before or between relays. Now that the topiic has come u p, I think I will request our shooters to only top up away form the benches in a more remote area.

I was under the impression that BR guns should be able to fire an entire 25 shot leg without refilling? For the record, just how hard are these guns shooting?

Our Tanks are placed well behind the actual shooting benches and are not allowed at the bench during live fire or otherwise anymore. If someone needs to fill during a relay they know where they have to fill it. It keeps it simple.

I'm shooting my AA100 at 875fps using Barracudas.

I just came from the range and looked at one of your rifles. Man what beautiful work. I am impressed. I look forward to trying it out later this evening.

Conditions at the range today are great. Sunny, 80 degree with a 3-5 mph breeze.

Right now the weather is really crappy in GA. We might delay tomorrow's match an hour or two as it's supposed to clear up later in the day.

Ray,
First, Welcome to AGBR, and good luck with the match tomorrow!

Second, thanks for posting your question. I'm the only one shooting a PCP at Salem and haven't noticed anyone else filling at the bench at the other two ranges I shoot AGBR at(Pinnacle Mtn. and Holbrook). It never occurred to me to refill during a target, and now that I think about it, I think I'll try it next time I shoot. I usually shoot about 35 shots per target, and I have noticed that my POI drops slightly towards the end of a target.

recharge during a relay

I have tuned a lot of guns, AA 100's included. I think I would always tend to tune for around 45 or more really good shots, even if absolute energy was a little down.

There is so little difference in useful accuracy between two airguns of say .... 17fpe and 20+fpe in a 25yd benchrest scenario that I would generally opt for more useful shots in a given velocity range rather than the most velocity I could crank out over way fewer shots.

There are some basic steps to use toward getting a relatively flat velocity range throughout a useful air charge, but I would'nt go into detail here, as that sorta stuff is more what we talk about over on my Delphi Forum, which is more heavy into tuning and building airguns.

my Delphi Forum,.

Please PM me the details on how to join your group. I want to learn how to work on my own airguns. I am already doing my br rimfires and centerfires.

There is what I understand to be a power adjuster in the back end of the CRX. I just haven't had time to start learning about the interactions of the regulator, hammer spring, etc.

Thanks
