Parkerizing question

I parkerized a 700 action the other day, and was pleased with the results.

I would like to do a steel barrel, but am not sure the procedure. Is it ok to let the solution go into the chamber and bore, like bluing?

Ben

No, plug the bore and chamber.

OK, just wondering how to do that, and then submerge the barrel in 180 degree solution. I suspect that the plug will pop out, and spew the liquid everywhere?

Long time ago somewhere I read about plugs, somebody spoke of equipping one end with a fine metal bleed tube long enough for the end to stay out of the bath when dunked.

Or maybe I dreamed it...........

Per heat the barrel and plug, then submerge the barrel. If you preheat the barrel to above the solution's temperature, what will happen? It will create a vacuum. The plugs will be well sealed.

It just seems like rocket science, but it ain't.:D

I drive tapered oak dowel rods in and they have never come out on me. The acid will etch your barrel otherwise.

Thanks guys, I knew there was a reasonable solution...or three.

Plugs for park

I use tapered silicon rubber plugs. I purchase them from Mc Master Carr, they work quite well are not expensive and are reuseable.I apply some light oil to the plugs and push one into each end before I abrasive blast. I have never had one fail to seal yet

Another wee tip is to drill a hole in the plugs and insert a section of AR15 gas tube. This allows the expanding air trapped inside the barrel to vent, preventing the plugs from popping out.:D

I have to ask if you drill the hole to let the air out, why can the acid not enter the barrel and ruin it??

The barrel won't get hot enough to pop out the plugs if you drive them in well enough and there isn't a problem.

Just put the silicone plugs

in tight and don't worry about it. I have done literally 100's of parkerizing jobs and NEVER has a plug come out. The temp is only about 180-190 degrees F
Its not like blueing where you run at around 300 deg F. Never plug the bore when blueing.

+1 This has also been my experience.

looks like parkerizing

Bnhpr,
To dull up a stainless barrel for hunting, I did a coarse sand blast and sprayed it with flat black Rustolium. Looks just like parkerizing with no danger of etching the bore. More importantly, the customer is happy.

Because the tube seals the hole, and it's bent upwards and well out of the level of the fluid.

The plugs will and do pop with short barrels.
