I am having a reoccurance of an eye condition I contacted in 1968 called hystoplasmosis syndrome. Right now my good eye is about 140/20. My other eye has been 200/20 since 1970. Hopefully the treatment going on will stop the leakage and some of my detail vision will return.

(Currently I have my computer display set on 800 x 600 and the browser set to 200% and everything is still spotty)

Good luck, Jerry. Eye problems as we get older are serious. My cataracts came on quickly--glasses prescripts changed every 3 months. I need the surgery but haven't yet worked up the courage.

Do you live in mississippi

From what I know about this disease it is common in the Mississippi region. Caused from inhaling certain fungal spores. A friend of mine developed this and it wasn't until the central part of his vision was affected that he knew anything was wrong. With laser surgery to stop the leakage he went from 90/20 in both eyes to 35/20.

I know a couple of people to have cataract surgery. Most come out okay.
But, I know a shooter. Who did not come out okay..........
One person came out great. Just needs glasses for computer.

Jerry good luck with your eye problem hopefully it can be fixed! I wish you the best!

vicvanb, I too had cataracts come on fast, I was 20/400 in one eye and couldn't see too good out the other. I had both eyes done and now I'm 20/20, it's a miracle what they can do. I had to have my friends encourage me to take that step and I'm passing on that encouragement to you, it's scary but you won't regret it. I was almost incapacitated and now it's like a new life has been given to me.

This ain't cataracts. I wish it was. As to glasses. over the years I have been to several ophthalmologists including Dr Banks Anderson at the Duke University Eye Clinic. Dr Anderson wrote many of the books on treatment of this condition.

If the leakages of the Hysto Syndrome condition occur the leakages can be welded with a laser if they are far enough away from the macula otherwise the laser will itself make a blind spot. Good camera, bad film.

Thanks for the encouragement--I appreciate it. The thought of someone cutting your eye is pretty scary.

We will keep you in our prayers Jerry, please let us know how things are going.

Jerry, if you need to go back to Duke & need to spend the night outside the hospital -- or any of your kin -- there's a room here for you. We're about 6 minutes away from the Eye Clinic, or main hospital, for that matter. You've got my email.

Jerry, and to all other with vision problems.
Unfortunatly your problem sounds to be a bit worse than cataracts. Do what Charles suggest and go to Duke and have them take care of your eye problems
asap. If Duke can't correct this problem, maybe someone else reading this can direct you where to go.
I have cataracts for about 3 years and was told they aren't serious enough to be eliminated yet, but the next time I see my eye doctor I will insist that they be taken care of. Cataract surgery, in most cases, can be done in the doctors office. This isn't lasik surgery, and unfortunately my eyes aren't a candidate for lasik. For shooters that wear bi/tri focal glasses, have your eye doctor fit you for single vision glasses just for shooting.
I wear contacts lenses (but need reading glasses). When I was mounting a scope, I saw two horizontal crosshairs due to the bifocals glasses I was wearing. After a few minutes, I realized what the problem was, not the scope but my bifocals.
Hope everyone reading this will take good care of their eyes. It is hard to be a good shooter when you have any vision problems.

Charles, I really appreciate the offer of your hospitality, it means a lot to me. Thanks.

As to Duke University Eye Clinic, they are tops but so is the Johnson City Eye Clinic where I am going now. IT has been some time since I was at Duke but while I was there Dr Anderson took a call from a fellow doctor. I heard him, myself, tell that doctor to refer that patient to Johnson City Eye Clinic saying they could do more for that patients problem than Duke could. I don't know that doctors patients problem since I couldn't hear both sides.

After the call I ask Dr Anderson why I was there and he said that JCEC wanted an outside opinion on whether a laser treatment would work for my problem since the leakages were so close to the macula. JCEC had already had 3 of their doctors examine my condition.

I had let my first onset go for a while and was working with my Optometrist. Then I went to a local ophthalmologist where there was just one doctor and multiple examining rooms. This guy was in the business to make money not to give the best patient care. In the eye medicine field there are optometrists and ophthalmologist. Optometrists fit you for glasses and ophthalmologist treat the more complex conditions.

The important point I would like here is if you just have minor vision issues that eyeglasses can help use an optometrist otherwise go to an ophthalmologist clinic, not just a single doctor office ophthalmologist but a clinic where there are several ophthalmologist that can offer a more in depth analysis. And don't hesitate to get other outside opinions.

Jerry, you have my best wishes. Without my glasses the vision in my right eye is so good that I can almost see the big E at the top of the standard reading chart with my glasses on. Without it's about the same. It never seems to be anything simple either.

My advice to anyone who experiences an unaccounted for vision problem is to get into a good ophthalmologist as fast as you can. Yesterday if possible. My right eye would likely work a lot better if I hadn't dawdled around for two months or more before seeing the eye doc.
