Paint Thickness on BR Stock

How much thickness does paint add to a benchrest stock on average? Would a metalflake paint add more thickness?

I'm working on sanding down a stock, and need to know how much undersize it needs to be in order to have it painted.

If you are painting a sho-nuff benchrest stock, be more concerned about how much weight the paint adds rather than the thickness.
 
Most Urethanes have a maxium build limit of about 10mils .009-.010 Thou

Several years ago I had Michael Kavanaugh repaint some benchrest stocks that I had painted. All three of them lost about 4 ounces each. That's the difference between having a stock painter paint a stock and doing it yourself. I'm sure it's a skill that can be learned, but probably not by just doing your own stocks. Kavanaugh has quit painting since he joined the military. I don't know who is doing it now. Some of the older stock painters are no longer with us.
 
Kavanaugh knows painting, custom painting, and BR stock painting.
He called me last week. He is still in San Diego as a permanent base. He does travel around a lot. He is typical military, B****, B****, and bitches.
I sure miss not having him around. He is gripping that the Republic of Kalifornia is giving him 'ell about his AR15 that he shoots competition with.

Butch, most of what I've seen of Kav is that he's into bicycle riding. That aggressive trail riding stuff. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to be a little more inclined that way. Least wouldn't have a gut, then.
