Has anyone ever used this product, or similar salts for bluing a stainless benchrest barrel?

Do you let it in the bore, as with standard bluing?

thanks

Olympic Arms in WA state blues SS barrels for their AR-15's and it looks the same as chrome moly. I don't know if they would share what they use or not.

Robar

applies their proprietary finishes to SS barrels and other SS parts on a daily basis. You might give them a call with your question. They are extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

Just curious, can you actually blue stainless steel?

Years ago Winchester iron plated their SS bbls on the 220 Swifts and then blued the plating.

Take a look at the ROBAR website. They can apply virtually all of their finishes to SS. I had a barrel coated with their Rogard finish about a year ago. The finish is guaranteed for life. It cost me $130.00 at the time.

I've used Oxynate 84, but not on a bR barrel. You need a fine sandblast surface for it to work the best. We never could get a good finish on polished stainless, lots of blotchy patches. It will rub off very very easily right out of the tank, and it needs to harden overnight. It's a fairly low heat process and plugging the barrel shouldn't be too hard. Also you could probably just swab it right out of the bore with a few patches and some JB too. The barrel I did last week went at 210deg. It seems to work well on 416 but we never had great results on 17-4. Also it will mottle blued CM while trying to black a stainless barrel.

I've got a old(1962) 700 BDL Remington that's blued SS, almost passed on it @ a gun show years ago until I saw "stainless steel" stamped in the barrel, bought it, called Remington and questioned them, they told me some of the first SS rifles were blued, said they had to be to get them to sell,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's a dark deep blue,,,, tougher than woodpecker lips too!

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
