Recently acquired a .308 with Kreiger 24" 1:11 twist. Looking for a good starting point for shooting out to 1000 yards. Suggestions?

When I lived in Houston and shot at Bayou rifles, I used 175 smks in my 1:12 twist 24" .308 at 1,000 yards with no difficulty (get them to 2,550 fps ++ and they will be fine at 1,000 yards.) Avoid the 168 smks, you cant shoot them fast enough from your short tube to keep them supersonic at 1,000 yards.

Your 1:11 tube is certainly capable of stabalizing the 185s and very likely the 190s (depending upon veloicty and weather conditions). Alternatively, you can go the other direction and shoot either the newer Sierra 155s or the Berger 155s (with the BC of the 175s, but 150 fps faster).

Good information! Yes I will be soon shooting this combo at Juliff.
How about the 168 Hornady AMAX? BC (g1) shows .475 on the website. I picked up a box of these yesterday morning... Worse case I can use em up for short range stuff.

Thanks for the feedback!

you should give them a try. The BC says it should be fine, depending upon the weather conditions (meaning on a cold winter day - temps of 30 derees - they are likely not stable). I know the 175 smks, 178 AMAX (when kept above2,550 fps), and the 155s from Berger, Lapua, and Sierra are all good to go from 1,000 at Bayou Rifles. I could get the Lapua 155s to 2,900 fps from my 24" tube (but it was a spicy load and did not like summer temps very much). 2,800 fps node was easy to reach w/ 155s and had no pressure or stability issues.

Your 11 twist should be fine with the 185 Berger HPBT. If you are uncomfortable with the 185s shoot the 168 Hybrids. At Bayou Rifles during the state long range match last year the 168 Berger Hybrids set the service rifle range record out of a M14 type rifle.

They might be okay, but I think you'll find much better results with their 178 AMAX.
