Just wondering what people thought of these? I am looking for a scope for a very accurate rifle that will punch paper but also take on the occasional deer hunt.

Just my opinion on my sample of 1.

There not as good as they should be.
Parralax is enormous. At higher powers mine is not always focused sharp while being parralax free.
If you wanted to hunt deer at just 4.5X you could do it. At higher powers you need to constantly check and adjust the parralax out. And theres a lot of it!!!

My biggest peeve. The non locking reticle focus on the ocular lense is not a vault tight fit. With the gun in the bags you can wiggle it and watch the target move. I say if you can't get em to fit tight like a NF put a lock on em.

I can't say with careful normal use it makes my guns more inaccurate. Sure does'nt help raise the confidence level though. Adds some stress during timed competitions. I never put it on my best shooters anymore. Its more of a slave scope now.

Depending on your specific needs maybe a Weaver 36X for paper and a good lower powered huntin scope would be better. Or maybe Sightron has one within your magnification needs.

use the search function on this forum, Google, etc. There's been a lot of discussion re: these scopes. Some good, some not so good.

I recommend you switch your focus to Sightron. :D

Do you have any specific information on the sightron?

Yes. What sort of specifics do you want?

I suggest you start by looking at their website info, and then searching for Sightron reviews on various shooting sites.

Both get mixed reviews all over. I asked here because I prefer people that have used them for precision shooting, not just hunting.

EDIT: the rifle is capable of very precise shooting. It will mostly be shot at a range and occassional competition with rare hunting trip. Any other suggestions? If I had the money I would get a night force.

In the past, I did a whole lot more hunting (95% of it 300 yds or less) than precision shooting and never considered a high quality scope. The bulk of mine were on the lower end of the mid grade, with one $13 Tasco that I shot about as much as anything else, because it was on a beater rifle I kept in my Bronco. None were more than 3-9x40

Lately I've been doing nothing but paper punching and found out real quick, those cheap/mid-priced scopes don't work. At least not with my eyes. I just ordered a Sightron SIII 8-32. With a scope like that though, you can forget about deer hunting with it, that is if your deer hunting is anything like it is here in GA.

My one Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 mm is performing perfectly, one of the best values out there. For your stated purposes I think you'll be pleased. I've not tried the new Sightron 8-32 but the lower power and lower priced Sightrons varmint scopes aren't that impressive.

I have on on a 260 Remington and highly recommend it. I have had no issue with it at all. I will buy another.:D

I have two of the elite 6500s

I was at the range yesterday and my rifle was wearing a 4.5x30x50MM Elite 6500. Other shooter had Leupolds new VX 3 4.5x14x40MM with 30MM tube. His was clear but not "clearer" Both scopes were identical . Was thinking of selling mine, not now. Really glad I had a peek through his. .... My other is the 2.5x16x50MM its lives on my AR-15 Flat top. It rules the desert when hunting coyotes !!!!

Seems I got a bad one. It happens even with the best. trust me I know:(
Thanks to this thread I bolted it on top of one of my actions with a new 243 Win barrel to give it another shot. Been having a heck of a time with load development. New factory barrel of unknown accuracy. Sometimes they can be fussy and tempermental.
Long story short today it started occasionally throwing rounds up two feet high at 200yds.
I knew it was'nt a bedding problem. The Pac Nor 6BR tube I took off this action could drill holes at 200. (with a Doctor Optics scope)
Pulled the Bushnell and put a Loopy back on. Ten shots at 200 less than 1 moa. No where near the accuracy I'm striving for but better than two feet.
It will have to go back.

Might as well box up my dead Loopy 36X and Weaver 36X while I'm at it.
I'm running out of scopes fast:eek:

On higher power setting ?

My 4.5x30x50MM 6500 could be better above 24 power. It isn't a perfect image. My eyes are 52 years old I'm uncertain if any scope would look better.
