Opening up Savage bolt head

Can I cut and "open up" the savage boltface with HSS lathe bit?

Al: why not use a Carbide Boring tool?

Because I don't have one and because my hold on the little bolt head is tenuous, I'd like to slice it out more gently??? Carbide just exerts more tool pressure IMO and I'm hoping to chuck the stub up, tap it into squarallel and slice a few thou out.

I'll check it tomorrow with a file, try some HSS and if it doesn't work I'll make up a liddle reach tool to get a carbide cutter in there.

I just hoped someone had done it..... or not. I think one guy's icon shows a Sav bolthead chucked up, probably for truing??

HSS will peel it back just fine.

I just trued up a savage bolt yesterday with HSS and it worked perfectly. Cut with no problems.
