How much clearance over the diameter of the casehead should you allow when opening up a bolt face?
The clearance required would depend on the style of bolt nose, how snugly the bolt fits the receiver and whether you want the ejector to function or are building a single shot. On a Remington 700 I opened up a while back, I went with .010" clearance on the case head and the ejector would not function. It would push the case out to where it cocked over at a slight angle and then hung up. I had to go to .015" to have good ejection. I think most of us on this forum tend to hold tighter tolerances than are required in most instances.
As an aside, when Ruger was developing the M-77, with everything machined on multiple stations, they encountered binding of the cartridge case heads due to the barrel chamber not being properly aligned with the bolt face. Their answer was to open the bolt face larger. Worked for them.
