We had some bench rest fun matches at our club yesterday to celebrate Labor Day. I always liked Joe Haller's old 50 foot open sight online match (not aperture, not peep, not ghost ring, but open) that was on the menu at Rimfire Central several years ago. So, a few of us gave that a try earlier in the summer and we vowed to try it again as one of the Labor Day events.
I posted a 205-0X at the first match and realized that what I thought was a zeroed CZ 452 Ultra Lux was not. A work session later got the rifle pretty much dead on. Here is the practice target from that day complete with an image of my sight picture:
The time and effort documented above paid off yesterday. We were in the middle of the third row before the UL and I dropped any points. A scoped sporter target earlier and running the matches took its toll and the fatigue factor cost me in the bottom half. But, a 243-5X is a big improvement:
I think a 250 is very possible with a fresh pair of eyes and a trigger finger that is facing the first target of the day.
Think about it. Just about any CZ will shoot a quarter inch or better group at 50 feet (even an eighth of an inch for that matter). Also, the wind would have to be quite heavy to have much influence at 50 feet. The shooter just has to do his or her part.
We wanted to encourage folks with simple equipment to participate. So, we used Joe's old factory sporter class rule in which the shooter cannot move or adjust the front rest after the shooting starts. One has to drive with the rear bag.
By the way, this was the first outing with the UltraLux at which I employed CZ's single shot adapter. I don't know why I didn't buy one of those years ago.
