Open Grove Results 4-10-11

We had 5 shooters this morning, conditions were light with some switch. It was a pleasure having Tim, LD, Matt S. and Matt K. making the trip up to join us. It was also nice to have Dale Herrick back shooting his 10m rifle.

1)Larry Durham, 227-4x, 236-5x, 233-4x, = 696-13x
2)Dale Herrick, 217-1x, 224-1x, 225-2x, = 666-4x

Sub 20fpe:
1)Tim McMurry, 241-7x, 243-5x, 245-6x, = 729-18x

Thanks again for the hospitality Joe! I was frustrated by the seemingly mild breezes that were STILL able to blow my pleets around in unexpected ways! I tried heavier pellets (15.9 and 8.4) than the last time (14.3 and 7.9), so erhaps that was an issue too, but fact remains, I was soundly beat down.

Yet still, my visit was only marred because you didnt shoot with us! Heck, I'm gonna see most a them guys that beat me here at my own place next week, so no point traveling two hunnert miles to have em beat me!

But still I really enjoyed myself, and hopefully have learned more about the value of waiting out the flag conditions!

LD, you're looking at it all wrong. These matches are being held only as qualifying matches to allow you to post your best agg score possible, and not as a competition. You are only competing against yourself, so don't let what others do bother you, even if they did whoop your butt. :):):)

Great shooting all.

Larry,

Folks that visit and shoot here always think this is a easy range because of the surroundings, it can be at times but there wasn't much wind on Sunday, but the switches and let offs will bite you every time, especially with an air rifle. You witnessed it like many others who come here to shoot, and leave flustered. I would rather shoot in a 7-10 mph wind that has a more consistent direction than a 3-5 mph with switches and let offs. You gentlemen shot good, I don't have to tell you, you can shoot because you all can and so do the USFT's, it really boils down to patience.

Regards,
Joe

No, Dave, thats YOUR opinion. If I were simply trying for the highest possible aggregate, I would schedule more matches at my own range, where I am more familiar with conditions, and have more opportunities to shoot on a really good day.

My reason for shooting is to enjoy the comraderie of the other shooters plus the learning ex[periences tht cn only be gained by shooting at unfamiliar ranges with other shooters, ESPECIALLY really knowlegable ones like the Open Grove guys!

Were I just challenging myself, I would rarely shoot with others, why bother? No, I enjoyed the shoot, but would never have bothered to go if it were for the reason you stated.

Like I said, I shoot with Tim, and the "two Matts" regularly without even leaving my home ... and would much prefer to shoot with the local Open Grove shooters rather then have them on the sidelines.

I'm with you 100%, and that's why I'm driving out to New York on Saturday for a Qualifying round. But, I stand by my opinion on what these shoots are all about, and on every shot compare myself to what my fellow shooter sitting next to me did in order to learn what I may have done wrong, or to maybe advise them on what I was seeing over my flags when they sent that "Holy Crap" shot flying.

Dave and Larry,

I agree in a very small way, the only factor by having shooters that know their equipment and particular range characteristics would help, would be having others focus and be more patient which could have a positive or negative effect. What i would call my aiming or starting point in certain conditions, especially in switchy conditions will be different then another persons. Every rifle that I've shot that was not mine I had to change the scope settings to suit my starting point in relation to the conditions. I don't have to tell someone the reason they did not perform well in any of our matches (rim-fire included) because they were not patient enough and missed the conditions, they already know the answer, unless there was equipment problems. The camaraderie is there, as it was even though we did not shoot. The reason we did not shoot was to give the ones that did shoot the benefit of the conditions, we discussed this beforehand and a lot of things during and after the matches. You cant' keep telling someone not to shoot during a match, that's what the sighters are for. That's why it's so important to know what your rifle can shoot through and the only way one can have some grasp is to practice in as many different conditions as possible. These rifles are not as forgiving as our rimfire BR rifles.

Our last match scores, I would call were pretty much even, this last match although we didn't shoot, I would bet my rifle they know why without us having to state a thing. Again the reason was to have 1 relay to have those shooters shoot before the wind and switch got worse, by the way it did. If they decide to come back we will shoot alongside them. I enjoyed having them here, Larry and Tim have a wealth of knowledge, there all great guys to be around.

Regards,
Joe
