We had 7 shooters for last nights match. We welcomed a new

shooter, 11 year old Diana Robinson to her first ever BR shoot. Now here's what happened. She and her father arrived early so that she could become familiar with the equipment. Her Dad put up a target and she began shooting with her dad coaching her looking through the spotting scope, as time approached for the first relay which Diana was in I looked through the scope and saw only 5 targets shot. The order was given to put targets up for the first relay, I made the decision to leave Diana's target up, thinking to myself she would not be able to complete it in the allotted time and didn't want her to get discouraged. As fate would have it Diana went on to shoot a 244 0x which would have been a new Match record.

I can't even put into words how terrible that decision was, at that time we all congratulated her on her awesome target, but the bottom line is the score can't be certified or even count as her first target. Diana, I apologize for my mistake and hope that you will be back to join us again.

I want to congratulate Diana for her awesome shooting and sportsmanship. Her target was followed up with a 231 1x and 238 1x. Look out folks Diana is for real.

Lastly, we all signed the target and will have it framed for her. (Fred will post a picture of Little Diana.)

Congrats goes out to John Carter for his win and New Unlimited Record, and a big welcome to Fred Leeds who joined us from Nevada for this match and our rimfire match this weekend.

Congratulations all on some very nice aggs.

Diana, you did good! Show those guys how it's done! That's some fine shooting for the first time out...or for anytime for that matter. I expect to see your name at the top of the list in short order.

Joe...forty lashes with a wet noodle. You made a decision that at the time seemed reasonable... but you underestimated the power of a woman! :D

Thanks for posting the scores and running the match. Congratulations to all the shooters. I ran an indoor match this weekend and your outdoor scores still were higher!
Fantastic shooting Diana!! Nice targets.
John 250 8X Great target those X are hard to get.

Joe, Our high scores in unlimited were made by FT shooters who came without
any rest just a sand bag. I had two Fudd rests and a one piece pappas rest for anyone to use, also two antique car jacks with a door knob used for elevation. They picked the car jacks both high targets were 248's both had agg of 739 one had 14X the other had 7X. Next trip to the range I am going back to my first rest a car Jack!

Don't feel too bad about your decision as we all make a bad ones hear and there. It's known as being part of the learning curve. At Saturdays match I was helping with the scoring and started down a very similar road, and I've been scoring targets for over 14 years.

I was scoring what appeared to be a no-chance target. Obviuosly, the person shooting it was inexperienced and new to benchrest, plus was under the impression you could only take 25 shots during the match, and, on top of that, was using a way under-powered scope making it so that he was unable to see where his pellets were impacting the target. On about the third row he had totally missed a target square and simply moved on to the next rather than reshooting it. Because of his newness to benchrest, plus the fact of him using such a low powered scope, he was unaware that the pellet had broken into the box around the next target instead of impacting the intended square. I knew right away what had happened and could see that he was on-course for a final score finishing somewhere in the mid 100's (which he did with a 136-0x) and knew (at least, I thought) this target was in no way establishing any kind of new INDOOR AIR GUN BENCH REST WORLD RECORLD.

As I was starting to explain to him what had happened and what the Rulebook says needs to be done, and, because this was the first match ever, how I was not going to penalize him for double-shooting that target, one of the other shooters was quick to point out that he was the only one shooting in the Springer Class, so, had it stood, that 136-0X score would have become the New Springer Class World Record! I immediately apologized to both him and the other shooters, and scored the target as it need to be scored.

Well, as it turned out, he did better it on the very next target shooting a 184-0X, so the whole issue turned out to be a mute point. But it happened!

I guess the lesson learned by both of us is: during a match when things are for-the-record, we as Rangemasters, Match Directors, Scorers or whatever have to treat every single target and every single shooter the same, no matter what, because we as Officials never know what the future may hold and should never presume anything!

Again, congratulations to all you fine folks out at Open Grove, and to Joe for his never ending generosity both with his time and equipment to help better our sport.

Al, you are so right.

Paul, thanks and honestly I thought your indoor scores would have been higher than our outdoor scores, and believe overtime when we all get this figured out that the scores will only improve with each match. You all did a fine job shooting this weekend.

Dave, thanks. When I looked at her target through the spotting scope she already had 3 of the five that weren't good, and her trying to get in the rifle was difficult i thought there is no way she would finish let alone shoot a target like that. I have no doubt now that Diana can hold her own and your last paragraph is "TRUTH", which is what is expected.

Thanks for all your efforts to be fair to everyone. You really go out of your way to help people and promote the sport.

Diana really enjoyed herself and thinks your range is a great place. She can not wait to come back to the next match.

Awesome shooting and congrat's to Diana.

Joe, I admire your efforts at getting the Air BR up and running! Hope to have San Diego going within a few months, barring any further setbacks. Would be appreciative of any tips or advice.

The fact that scores are already 250 & close to double digit X's is wild, and moving out to 50 yards seems inevitable.

Once again, tip o' the Hat to all, and hang on to your own hats as this Air Rifle Benchrest is getting ready to explode!

Gordon it's great to see another range coming in, hopefully the interest stays and new folks gain interest. They are a challenge and a lot of enjoyment to shoot.


I can't give much advice, this so new to all of us, but the 20 cal. at this time seems to be the caliber for 25 yrds. It's more forgiving and stable in the wind and to the switches. Will shed more light on this soon after more testing. John who has been shooting my 20 cal. ordered one because of how forgiving this one is to shoot. Lets hope his 20 is as forgiving. Will post back with our findings.
