Ol Bill Calfee tried to short change us.

While doing some more SS windflag research, I came across this interesting little tid-bit.......................

Not only did Mr. Bill Calfee participate and log a very respectable 3rd place yardage finish at SS #5, it seems he forgot to tell us that he returned the very next year and logged a 9th place yardage finish out of 211 competitors in the Sporter gun class at SS #6.

This poor, wo-is-me, I am not a very good centerfire shooter is beginning to smell a little fishy.

I wonder how many big centerfire competitions he was involved in over the years and is hiding from us. If his rimfire buddys find out about this they may just dis-own him for going over to the dark side.

Points of interest for SS #6, at Kelbleys facility;

1. 211 Sporter competitors, 279 Heavy Varmint competitors.

2. $16,780 in total prize money (maybe thats why Bill decided to return).

3. There were a few individual windflags at this SS #6, but it was hard to pick them out of all the dandoline growth on the shooting range, makes you wonder if George K. could afford a lawnmower back in the old days (good attachment#c photo of the shooting range field and windflag situation.............nothing like todays shoots).

Man, you're going to give my rimfire buddies the wrong impression of me...

I've never seen that issue of PS either.....and I don't believe it but the second of your three pictures has a picture at the top, of the loading barn...
Man, I don't believe it but I'm in that picture.....I'm about 6' 9" tall....skinny as a rail, with big ears....my hands hang down about to my knees and my shirt tail was always out cause I couldn't find shirts long enough...

If you look closely, right side of the picture, that's me....you can see my big ear, skinny, long arm, and my shirt tail pulled up past my belly button....that's me.....I don't believe it.....(glad my face wasn't in the picture)

I may be wrong but that looks like my sleeved sporter there on the loading bench....I can't be positive but the sleeve was skeltonized.....it sure looks like it....

Don, thanks again.......never did no one who didn't shoot no better than I did ever get so much publicity...

Since you've become the Benchrest Historian, do you think you could find the details of the Speer Matches, In Tenn, about that time frame...late 70's?

I built a little sporter for Jim Campbell, from Kentucky....He had a very interesting day at those matches.....I only heard about his shooting but never saw anything in print.....don't go out of you way to do this Don.

Thanks again for the memories....I enjoyed you recounting of your trip..

Your friend, Bill Calfee

Bill, I for one enjoy your articles and your writing style.........so don't take this wrong...............but this is both priceless and classic.

The patience you display through all of the goings on here is unreal.
