Well, I found a deal I couldn't resist locally. Nesika J, 6ppc 262 and 22ppc barrels (hart and lilja), boosted leupy 45br-d, six stock, jewell trigger, jewell rings. I'm planning to start competing in short range benchrest- I'm very new to this - so I pretty much need everything to reload for this cartridge. I just learned how to reload for my savage f-class 6br on my redding big boss press in my garage. It seems that the 6ppc is a totally different animal. For starters, I'm being told to get an arbor press/dies for the 6ppc. Some questions:

I can find very little info on arbor presses, the only one that comes up is Sinclair. Anyone have any links?
Is there a name for the type of dies you use in an arbor press - I'm pretty sure I can't also use them in my press in my garage, right?
So I need a seating die, but do I need just a neck sizer or a tsfull body or a small base or ?????
I see that you can buy turned brass, I'll probably just buy 100 of these to save me the time/money of buying equipment and learning how to do this too.
Any recommendations of "sure thing" bullets? I've been told 65 or 68 (14 twist) Barts, but there are 3 variations of barts bullets alone.
What else do I need????

Here's how my 6br has done so far - 3 shot groups

Hi Slim.
I am sorta new to Benchrest. I competed in 7 tournaments, this year.
First updated your sign in / name, to included your location. There might be someone near your home, that can help you out.
Someone to call. Go to the range with. Join their club with. Find the local matches. Etc.
I got lucky......
Next go to the Sinclair site. Find their phone number. Call them. Their tech. get paid to talk. They have it all.
Full length die. Uses reg. press.

Wilson seater die at Sinclair and arbor press.
Ron for brass.

Bart's bullets. 68 BT.
And Sinclair sells a book by Mike Ratigan.

I got lucky. Up in the Eastern Region. Are some of the best shooters And some of the nicest people.
They all say. There are no secrets in Benchrest.
Keep asking questions. You will get answers.
Join the NBRSA or IBS.

Some more advice. From the old guys. And they are winners.
"The best place to learn Benchrest, is at a match".
"Buy the best tools. Buy once pay once".
"Just buy the best. Ya know you are going to anyway".
"A tuned rifle, will beat the best wind reader".

All heard at tournaments.

It always disappoints me that BR shooters that sell guns to newbies don't include the sizing die and the fired brass and maybe some loaded rounds. They could at least tell you which exact sizing die to buy and what bullets worked best for them at what OAL.

Buying prepped brass from Ron Hoehn or Bruno's or whoever is your best bet.

I am using a Harrell's sizing die. Send them 3 fired cases and they will select a die that best suits your chamber. This die fits your current press. You will need a couple of sizes of neck bushings that you can get when you order the brass.

Wilson seater die is the BR standard but a Forster Ultra BR seater or a Redding seater will do a good job and work in your press.

You will need a bore guide.

Good luck

If you decide to buy a Harrel sizing die, I recommend you send 3 NEW cases fired 3-4 times. Do not send the old used brass you might have received with the gun.

Get a benchrest gunsmith to put you on a new barrel and buy your dies from him that are made to work together. Any of the proven winning gunsmiths can get you fixed right up and youll know what you got

Is it just me, or has anybody else seen pictures of groups with a coin laid beside the group and wondered if the coin was covering up a fly er?

Big Al, I'm not that vain. Are these groups that good that you're suspicious?

I'm located in Tacoma and shoot at TRRC.

Nobody has a favorite match bullet that work well in most guns?

Again, having a new barrel installed with a proven reamer will let you know what bullet to shoot. My combo likes barts ultras. If you call him he will tell you which bullet to try.

Those groups show much promise from a factory gun with 8 twist. You should be happy. Of course groups need five shots around here and repeatability really helps but you must be a fast learner:)

My used (first) 6ppc has what I would consider a long throat. Longest bearing surface of the few custom bullets I had on hand were 68gn Barts Ultras. Only bullet I've tried so far besides 68 Bergers.
The Ultras outshoot me so theres no sense in me buying something else.
